WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Fallon Lozano scored six goals, and the Nipmuc girls lacrosse team used a 6-0 third period to break open the game en route to an 18-7 win over Mount Greylock on Sunday afternoon.

Lozano had four of those third-period goals. Jayden Lilburn, who scored five times, added two scores in what eventually was a 9-0 Nipmuc run that ended midway through the fourth.

After Reese Raymond (three goals) scored on a free position with 1 minute left in the first half to make it 8-5, the Mounties went the next 19 minutes without a goal.

“We had a bunch of turnovers, we had a couple of failed clears, we weren’t winning the 50/50 balls on the draws,” Mount Greylock coach Jeff Stripp said of the third quarter. “They had a couple of free position shots which they converted on.

“It was just a quarter of things not going our way, really.”

Lilburn scored the game’s first goal for the visitors in the second minute of play.

But Mount Greylock struck right back just more than a minute later when Molly Cangelosi (three goals, three assists) set up Raymond, who made it 1-1.

Nipmuc went back on top, but Cangelosi converted a free position chance with 3 minutes, 5 seconds left in the first to tie it again.

Nipmuc then scored the next four goals to grab the lead for good, going ahead, 6-2, in the third minute of the second quarter.

Cangelosi scored twice in less than a minute to make it a two-goal game, but the visitors took a three-goal lead into half-time.

The second half was all Nipmuc until Raymond and Meghan Lagerwall were able to find the back of the net late for Mount Greylock.

Teigan Brady stopped six shots for the Mounties, who lost the game but gained valuable experience against Central Mass squad that is ranked No. 10 in Division 4 statewide in the latest MIAA in-season power rankings.

“It wasn’t our cleanest game as far as stick work, ground balls, the things that really make a difference when you’re playing a team like this,” Stripp said. “We love getting matchups like this. The first half, we were trying some new things on offense that looked good for us.

“We have to learn how to play in more competitive games like this, consistently, across four quarters. … I think the learning is really taking care of the simple things. Our motto is, ‘Do simple better.’ And I think we struggled with it a little bit.”

Mount Greylock (4-7) is right back at it again on Monday when it travels to face Belchertown.
