LENOX, Mass. — The Drury softball team is young this year. Regardless of their inexperience, the Blue Devils proved on Monday that they should be a fun team to watch after opening up the season with a 14-1 road win over Lenox.

Senior captain Lyndsey DeGrenier led a hard-hitting Drury attack, smacking a home run to center field in the top of the fourth inning and finishing with four runs batted in on the day. Junior Katie Hancock got the visitors off to a quick start, hitting a triple to left field to spark a three-run first inning. Hancock went 2 for 3 on the day with three runs scored, while classmate Laryssa LaPointe batted 1 for 2 with three runs and two stolen bases.

"Today was a day when lots of questions were answered," Blue Devils head coach Mary Ann Maroni said. "We have a young team this year and there are a lot of variables. It was a good outing, though, where everyone got to play. Amber Iacuessa had a good game at catcher, and Lyndsey provided the big bat today."

Drury padded its lead with three runs in the third inning and four more runs in the fourth. Sophomore starter Cat Record only had one bad frame, missing out on a shutout by surrendering one earned run in the bottom of the fourth. Still, it was a very solid outing for Record, who picked her first win of the year by striking out 11 batters compared to five walks.

"Cat was pretty lethal most of the time, but had a shaky fourth inning when she walked three consecutive batters," Maroni said. "She regained her composure and struck out the final two, though."

The Blue Devils are back in action again on Wednesday, when they host Lee at 4:15 p.m.
