NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The McCann Tech softball team defeated Granby Monday afternoon, 12-8, at DiSanti Field in North Adams.

McCann pitcher Haley Malloy pitched six innings, striking out seven, before Michaela Malloy took over half way through the top of the sixth inning after Haley Malloy walked three batters. Michaela Malloy struck out one in the top of the seventh inning.

"Haley got a little tired, she pitched a great game," McCann coach Robin Finnegan said. "She's battling a shoulder injury too, so I have to be careful with her and then Michaela came in and finished it up."

Granby got on board first in the first inning, and brought in two more runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead, but the Hornets came out in the bottom of the second and took a 6-3 lead, running through their batting lineup.

McCann extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth to 10-3.

"Our bats have been pretty good the last couple of games," Finnegan said. "It was our defense that was lacking and today we actually stepped up defensive wise."

McCann had a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth before scoring its final two runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 12-3.

Granby came out in the top of the sixth and scored five runs and then had a 1-2-3 inning in the second half of the inning; allowing no one to get on base, but McCann was able to hold them scoreless in the seventh for the 12-8 win.

"The girls stayed positive the whole game and that's what we need to do," Finnegan said. "It's a rebuilding year for us so each game we're just looking for improvement."

McCann Tech (2-2) hosts Mount Greylock on Wednesday afternoon.
