NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The McCann Tech softball team ended the regular season on a down note on Thursday, allowing three unearned runs on four errors in a 3-2 home loss to Gateway. The Hornets outhit the Gators 6-3 in the game but left nine runners on base. After winning four straight games to improve its record to 12-6, McCann dropped its final two games of the regular season by a combined three runs.

"Again, our defense came out flat and had a few errors," Hornets head coach Robin Finnegan said. "We outhit them but could not get the runs across the plate. If we want to win in the postseason, execution is a must. Gateway only had three hits but took advantage of our mistakes. Most softball teams don't win only scoring two runs. Six of our eight losses have been by two runs or less. We have to find a way to get the bats going."

McCann scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Gators rallied back with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Senior Katlyn Haring was great in defeat for the Hornets, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out three batters. She didn't allow a single run and went the distance as her season record dropped to 9-7. Six different batters had at least one hit for McCann, which now awaits the release of the Western Mass.
