Errors Plague McCann in Loss to Gateway

HUNTINGTON, Mass. —  The McCann Tech softball team had one disastrous inning that was too much too overcome in a 12-5 loss to Gateway on Thursday.

The Hornets led 2-1 coming out of the top of the fourth inning, but the Gators responded by scoring seven times in the bottom of the frame. Gateway scored three more nuns in the next inning to put McCann (2-1) down 11-2, and that proved to be too big of a hole for Robin Finnegan's team to climb out of.

"We hit a road block today against a good-hitting Gateway team," Finnegan said. "I was dissappointed in the defence since that is usually one of our strong suits. I am positive we will bounce back today against a very strong Ware team. We just couldn't catch a break with the bats. We hit the ball right at people, and Gateway made the plays. In the good-news department, we get to face them again, and I am confident it will be a different outcome."

In other good news, sophomore Katie Hancock had a nice day at the plate, going 2-4 with a home run and a triple. In three games so far this season, Hancock is batting an impressive .636 with seven hits and seven RBI. Senior Brianna Malloy also chipped in by hitting two singles and scoring a run for the Hornets.

Senior Katlyn Haring scattered 11 hits over five innings of work to take her first loss of the season. She gave up 11 runs (six earned) while walking three and striking out two.

McCann will try to get back on track with a game today, Friday, at Ware at 4:00 p.m.
