PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Mount Greylock softball team followed up its first rough patch of the season with perhaps one of its finest performances of the year on Wednesday, playing well on both sides of the field in a 9-1 road win over Pittsfield.

The Mounties (7-2) started the season off with six straight wins before running into a two-game losing steak in the past week. June Blake's squad was back on its game on Wednesday, however, committing just one error in the field and touching up Generals' starter Sarah Rayner for nine runs on 10 hits. It was the first county and league loss for both Rayner and Pittsfield (9-2) this season.

"Today we did a great job of executing on both sides of the ball," Blake said. "We moved runners when we had to and came up with timely hits. Defensively, we did a good job keeping them off the bases and when there were runners on, we made the plays. We were able to put together a complete game. We have not been stellar defensively in the last few games, but we were able to put it all together today."

Greylock got things rolling right out of the gate, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Senior captains Caitie Benoit and Michaela DiNicola, who each went 3-for-4 from the plate, started things off by collecting base hits. Fellow captain Sierra Holland then sacrificed the runners over before sophomore Meredith Dezieck scored one run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Senior Alyssa Mangiardi followed up with another base hit before freshman Miranda Voller loaded the bases with a walk. Sophomore Kendal Frye then struck the big blow, clearing the bases with a three-run double.

The visitors struck four times in the top of the third inning thanks to three walks, a hit batter and two-out, three-run single by DiNicola. Sophomore pitcher Heather Tomkowicz closed out the scoring for the Mounties by hitting a solo home run in the seventh. Tomkowicz also earned the win in the circle, allowing just one earned run on five hits. She struck out six and walked five to improve her record to 7-2 on the year.

Greylock next plays at Hoosac Valley at 4 p.m. on Friday.
