RUTLAND, VT — If the first week of the season is any indication of how the rest of the year is going to play out, the Mount Greylock softball team should be in for a very fun ride in 2012.

The Mounties closed out a perfect start to the season on Saturday, earning their third victory in the past six days with a 9-5 road win over Rutland. June Blake's squad pulled away from the hosts with a four-run sixth inning, taking advantage of three Raiders' errors to score four unearned runs on just one hit.

Greylock (3-0) jumped out to a sizeable lead by scoring five runs in the top of the second inning. Meredith Dezieck, Anna Penna, Michaela DiNicola and Heather Tomkowicz all had RBI singles in the frame, giving Tomkowicz a nice cushion to work from out of the circle. The Mounties sophomore cruised through the first four frames, allowing just one run over that span before running into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Rutland connected for four runs on six hits in the inning before Tomkowicz was able to retire the side with the score tied at five runs apiece.

"We were able to jump out to an early lead in this one," Blake said. "Rutland responded in the fifth inning, but we made some great plays defensively to hold them to only four runs that inning. We were able to throw two runners out at the plate. We then gathered ourselves and capitalized on our opportunities in the top half of the sixth."

Tomkowicz ended up going the distance, striking out seven and walking just one batter on her way to earning her third win of the year. Dezieck and senior Alyssa Mangiardi each finished with two hits and one run batted in to pace the Greylock offense.

The Mounties return to action again on Monday, when they host Mount Anthony at 4 p.m.
