NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The McCann Tech boys basketball team defeated Westfield Vocational Monday evening, 53-27.

Although McCann was able to pull away the win this evening, coach Mike Nykorchuck feels as though his team has work to do for its game Tuesday night against Mount Greylock.

“We have to come and play with more energy that we did tonight,” Nykorchuck said. “I thought we were very flat. I just thought we didn’t have the enthusiasm, and to play well in big games, you have to be enthusiastic and have a lot of energy; tonight we were just going through the motions.”

McCann took an early lead on the Tigers, creating turnovers on their press. The Hornets went into half-time ahead, 30-13.

Westfield was able to shut down one of McCann’s leading scorers, Shane Fuller, who finished the game with only 2 points, but Rahmer Vincent stepped up in his place finishing with a team high of 17 points and Cody O’Neil's rebounding down low gave the Hornets extra possessions.

“There was a while where Rahmer really gave us a lift,” Nykorchuck said. “Cody did a super job rebounding, which is probably the difference in the game because if we don’t get those rebounds we’re not getting our second chance points.

“I guess the positive is that I don’t think we’ve won a game where Shane has only scored two points, so other people stepped up for us.”

McCann only scored four points in the third quarter; missing a lot of lay-ups down low. On the other end, Westfield only put in one foul shot leaving it at 34-16 going into the fourth.

In the final eight minutes the Hornets pushed the ball up the court, and they were able to get those easy baskets down low; defensively they continued to put a stop to Westfield.

“Not to make excuses for my team, but maybe they were looking past this game to the Greylock game,” Nykorchuck said. “I know they’re very excited about that game and I just know we’re going to have to play better to compete with Greylock.”

McCann now 3-0, will travel to Mount Greylock (3-0) Tuesday evening.
