Hoosac Valley Boys Rebound from Road Loss
CHESHIRE, Mass. — The Hoosac Valley boys basketball team gets a nice bounceback win over Hampshire, 65-46, Tuesday night at home.
Hoosac Valley (11-6) showed no signs of fatigue as they took care of business at home on the second night of a back-to-back.
After falling short on the road to Bay State Academy, the Hurricanes turned their focus towards Hampshire and were able to dominate the game from the jump.
Carson Meczywor started the night with the game's first four points and really kick-started the offense for the Hurricanes like he has all season long. Meczywor finished with 22 points, including 11 in the first quarter. Frank Field posted the game-high with 23 points and Joey McGovern had nine.
The two bright spots for the Hurricanes were the offensive glass and transition points. They were able to not only force turnovers and get the offense going but also secure rebounds and get the ball out in front of the defense, something coach Bill Robinson was worried about with back-to-back games.
“We just tried giving a good effort tonight after the tough loss last night in Springfield,” Robinson said. “Playing back-to-back is tough for kids and I was concerned with our mindset so whatever it took.”
After taking a 18-13 lead in the first quarter Hoosac Valley continued to pile it on in the second. Frank Field scored 10 of his points in the quarter including 4-for-5 from the free throw line. The team went 9-for-10 from the line which was a nice boost that any coach would love to see.
Hoosac Valley held Hampshire to just nine points in the quarter and put this game to bed before the half-time buzzer even hit. Hampshire looked to regroup in the third quarter and made a nice little run to start, but the deficit was too much and when Hoosac turned up the defensive pressure Hampshire had no answer for the traps Hoosac set all over the court.
With the game in hand Hoosac looked to try some new things defensively and try to figure out even more what they have going forward on offense.
“We tried to do some different things with defensive personnel and offensively trying to figure out who we are even this late in the year,” Robinson said. “We are Meczywor and Field and everyone knows that, but we need someone else to step up with consistency.”
Hoosac Valley will finish off the regular season on Thursday against Pioneer on the road in hopes to go into tournament season on a high note.
