Sci-Tech Stops Pittsfield in Class B Final
HOLYOKE, Mass. – The Sci-Tech boys basketball team Wednesday used a 9-0 second half run to break the game open and went on to a 65-47 win over Pittsfield in the championship round of the Western Massachusetts Class B Tournament.
Marcus Jones scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked five shots as the top-seeded Cybercats snapped Pittsfield’s three-game winning streak.
The Generals (13-7) were held in the 40s for the fourth time this year – all four times in their last nine games.
“I felt like we didn’t execute well on the offensive end, and … it just bled into our defense,” Pittsfield coach Jerome Edgerton said. “And they’re a good team. I’ve got to take my hat off to them.”
Pittsfield hung with the fifth-ranked team in Division 3 statewide until late in the third quarter.
The Generals took a 14-11 lead late in the first quarter on a drive by Sam Touray to make it 14-11.
Pittsfield was up by one after one, but a Sci-Tech steal led to a basket by Jeremy Green (13 points), starting an 11-4 spurt that ended with a couple of baskets by Jones to make it 24-18, Sci-Tech.
Pittsfield recovered, making it a one-possession game on a basket by Quincy Abellie with an assist from Noah Smalls.
But Sci-Tech’s Anthony Sanchez drained a 3-pointer that put the Cybercats up by six, 29-23, at half-time.
It was a four-point margin after Braiden Sullivan (15 points) hit a 3 and Smalls drove the lane to make it 34-30 with 5:55 left in the third. And after Sci-Tech scored five in a row, Sullivan responded with a basket in transition and three makes at the free throw line after getting fouled behind the arc, making it 39-35.
Then the Cybercats pulled away for good.
Green hit a 3-pointer that started a 9-0 spurt that spanned the third and fourth quarters, and Pittsfield never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
After Cam Mochon (eight points) scored in the post midway through the fourth to make it 53-42, Sci-Tech finished the game on a 13-5 run.
Pittsfield, though, is not finished. The Generals learn Saturday where they will open play in the D3 State Tournament.
