NORTH ADAMS, Mass — For the McCann Tech girls' basketball team to qualify for the Division 3 Western Mass. tournament this season, the Hornets have to win their final three league games to finish in second place in the Bi-County West.

Consider Step No. 1 accomplished.

McCann had little trouble with visiting Putnam on Friday night, holding the Beavers to just one point in the second quarter and just two points in the fourth to earn a big 43-18 win at The Hive. The two teams were tied after the first quarter, but the Hornets (5-10) pulled away slightly in the second to build a 15-10 lead at the half. Kristen Lewis' team then blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Putnam 16-6 in the frame.

"We played very well and the intensity was there the whole game," Lewis said. "We are looking forward to playing both Sci-Tech and Southwick to get to the Western Mass. tournament. We had three girls score double figures, which really boosts our offense, team moral and player confidence."

Junior guard Mary Nguyen led the way by scoring 11 points for McCann. Seniors Brittany Briggs and Ashley Alibozek each scored 10 points as well. Briggs also dished out a team-high three assists, while Alibozek tied Cassie Field with a team-high six rebounds.

The Hornets next game is also a big league contest, with Sci-Tech coming to town for a 7 p.m. tip off on Tuesday night.
