TURNERS FALLS, Mass. -- Makenzie Ullrich scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the Mount Everett girls soccer team Friday bounced back from a season-opening loss with a 40-21 win over Smith Vocational in the consolation game of the Franklin Tech Tournament.

The victory evened the Eagles’ record at 1-1 and gave the first win to first-year head coach Ashley Barrett.

“It feels like I’m doing something right,” Barrett said with a smile. “It feels really good.”

Less than 24 hours earlier, Mount Everett was not feeling so good after dropping a seven-point decision to host Franklin Tech.

On Friday afternoon, the Eagles took control of the game with an 11-2 second quarter to take an 11-point lead into half-time.

From the midway point of the first quarter until five minutes into the third quarter, Mount Everett allowed just two points..

“I feel like they played a lot harder than yesterday,” Barrett said. “I told them before the game to just not play scared anymore, play their game, and they’ll see great results.”

Ullrich had six steals, and Madeline Von Ruden had three swipes to go with three assists. Maggy Sarnacki scored six points, and Ashley Atwood pulled down nine rebounds.

The Eagles took the lead for good when Julia Devoti set up Ullrich for one of her three first-quarter 3s to erase a 10-9 deficit midway through the first quarter.

Atwood opened the second quarter with a bucket in the post off an assist from Sarnacki, and after the Vikings answered to get back within two at 14-12, Mount Everett closed the half on a 9-0 run that ended in a triple by Sarnacki.

Mount Everett scored the first nine points of the third quarter to stretch its lead to 20 points when Emma Stewart hit a 3 to make it 32-12.

The Eagles got offense from six different players, a switch from Thursday, when just three Mount Everett players got in the scoring column -- albeit all in double figures.

Friday’s win is more impressive considering the fact that center Emma Goewey, who scored a team-high 14 in Thursday’s loss, was sick on Friday and did not travel with the team.

“I had to think a lot about who I would have step in her place, because we don’t really have anyone her height to replace her,” Barrett said. “Everyone else is more like a guard. So I had to do a lot of rearranging and have one of my other forwards step in and play that role.”

The Eagles go back on the road on Tuesday to take on Hoosac Valley in Cheshire.
