DALTON, Mass. — No. 12-seeded Cohasset pulled off a 53-50 upset over No. 5-seeded Wahconah on Wednesday night.

It was a milestone night for Cohasset’s Addy Andrews, who scored a game-high 29 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career.

The game was a defensive battle throughout, but Cohasset struck first, jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. Wahconah responded with a 6-0 run to tie the game midway through the opening quarter. Cohasset handled Wahconah’s pressure well, moving the ball effectively against the zone to build an 18-12 lead by the end of the first.

Wahconah adjusted in the second quarter, tightening its zone defense and trapping in the corners. The hosts converted those defensive stops into much-needed offense and managed to take a 26-24 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Wahconah had opportunities to extend its advantage but struggled to finish at the rim. Cohasset continued to find seams in the zone and used a quick 5-0 run to grab a 32-27 lead with 3 minutes, 27 seconds left in the period, forcing Wahconah to call timeout.

Out of the timeout, Wahconah answered with a 5-0 run of its own to even the score. Much of Wahconah’s offense came from corner traps that led to transition layups. Wahconah closed the quarter strong when Madison McCarthy converted a layup off a defensive rebound just before the buzzer.

McCarthy stayed hot to open the fourth, drilling a corner 3 to give Wahconah a 42-40 edge. The teams traded tough baskets down the stretch in a back-and-forth finish.

Andrews took control late, slipping to the basket for a go-ahead score before knocking down a 3-pointer with under three minutes remaining to put Cohasset ahead 46-44.

Sammie Kaley, who battled through foul trouble for much of the game, delivered in the closing minutes. She scored four late points, including a coast-to-coast finish that gave Wahconah a 50-49 lead.

Cohasset responded with the next four points to reclaim the lead at 53-50. Wahconah had a final opportunity in the closing seconds but was unable to get a clean shot off as time expired.

The Skippers move on to the state quarter-finals at No. 4 Millbury, a 54-35 winner over Northbridge on Wednesday.
