The Mass MoCA Commission on Wednesday approved the seasonal restaurant to occupy the former Gramercy space, specifically the courtyard near the museum entrance. The restaurant would operate from Memorial Day until some time September.
Workers at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art are looking to unionize after they say the pandemic has highlighted unfair working conditions and job insecurity at the world's largest contemporary art museum.
The 10-foot diameter precast tubs will be arranged in an arc between Buildings 19 and 25, just east of Joe's Field, and are designed to resonant with sound. They're the creation of artist Taryn Simon, whose "A Cold Hole and Assembled Audience" made a splash at the museum in 2018.
Selected as one of just 51 grants nationwide in this category, the two-year, $100,000 matching grant will support the North Adams Artist Impact Coalition, a collaborative initiative designed to maximize artist support in the North Adams community and better connect artists to regional resources and to each other.
The annual community celebration is brimming with art-making, gallery tours, live music, pop-up performances, fun photos, a free screening of "Museum Town" directed by Jennifer Trainer Thompson, and tons more to inspire and explore.
And while the commissioners were supportive of the efforts being made by Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts in developing the empty lot into a park to entice its visitors to the downtown, they acknowledged they had no control over the 40-foot by 40-foot installation that's going to be facing Main Street.
The installation by award-winning artist Martin Puryear has been stored in crates in the corner of the parking lot behind Big Y for the last couple years after being on display in Philadelphia and New York City.
