The Eileen Barrett Women's Cancer Support Group will meet on Tuesday, June 8 at its new location, the Spitzer Center at 116 Ashland Street in North Adams. The group meets from 5 to 6:30 pm. Light refreshments are served.
Research has shown that when women with cancer participate in support groups, they are better able to use the crisis in their lives to make positive changes to improve their lives. Research also suggests that women live longer when they participate in such groups.
The support group gives women an opportunity to be with other women who understand what it is like to face cancer and who are coping with many of the same issues. While many of the participants are dealing with breast and gynecological cancers, women with all types of cancer are welcome.
The support group was started by Eileen Barrett, a long-time nurse at North Adams Regional Hospital. After Eileen died of breast cancer in 1988, the group was named in her honor. The support group is under the direction of REACH for Breast Health, a program that provides ongoing education and support for women facing breast cancer as well as other cancers. It is a program of the REACH Community Health Foundation and Northern Berkshire Health Systems. Financial support is provided by the Eileen Barrett Foundation, with additional funds from both the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
The Eileen Barrett Women's Cancer Support Group meets regularly on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Participation is confidential and free. Carol Guernsey, RN, Breast Health Specialist and Program Manager of REACH for Breast Health, coordinates the support group. Susanne Walker, LICSW, is facilitator of the group. Women are encouraged to call Carol Guernsey at 664-5170 to register, but are also welcome to attend without calling ahead.
