Local Students Earn Williams College Degrees

Williams College President Morton Owen Schapiro today conferred bachelor of arts degrees on nine graduates from Berkshire County at the college's 218th Commencement. Dalton: Thomas Martin Koperniak - Chemistry Hancock: Jennifer Elizabeth James - English and Honors in Mathematics - Cum Laude Elected to the scientific honor society Sigma Xi. North Adams: Sean Anthony Carollo - English and History Son of James and Lydia Carollo. Was a member of the marching band and of the humor magazine Mad Cow. Allyson Marie Holmes - History and Political Science Daughter of James Holmes and Christine Robare. Was a member of College Council, the mentoring group Best Buddies, Peer Advisors, History Advisory Group, Cross Country Team, and Track and Field Team. Bethany Ruth Lorge - Psychology Daughter of Allan and Nancy Lorge. Received an Alumni Internship and won a Rev. Sinclair Hart Memorial Award for Community Service. Was a member of the Varsity Softball Team, Varsity Basketball Team, and Christian Fellowship. Served as a junior advisor, academic peer advisor, middle school intern, pen pal for local elementary school students, and first-year orientation leader. Pittsfield: Tessa Marie Kelly - Art and English Daughter of Andrew and Susan Kelly. Received a Certificate in Spanish. Was a member of the Lacrosse Team and Indoor Track and Field Team and of the Williams Art Collective; studied in Oaxaca, Mexico, and Buenos Aires, Argentina; and volunteered at the Clark Art Institute. Williamstown: Colleen Rogers Gerrity - History Daughter of Ann and Michael Gerrity. Served as a sports medicine student trainer, academic peer advisor, elementary school volunteer, member of the History Advisory Group, and co-chair of the Premedical Society. Juan Gabriel Baena Parra - Political Science Son of Maria Nelsy Restrepo and the late Jesus Guillermo Baena. Won a Campus Life Commitment to Diversity Award and Multicultural Center Special Recognition Award. Was a member of the Gospel Choir, the Latina/o student organization Vista, Black Student Union, and Minority Coalition. Jared Hillel Strait - Honors in Physics - Magna Cum Laude Son of Robin Brickman and Jefferson Strait. Elected to the scientific honor society Sigma Xi. Won a William W. Kleinhandler Prize for Excellence in Music. Served as a physics tutor, computer science teaching assistant, and telemark ski instructor. Was a member of the Cross Country Team, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Teams, Symphonic Winds, and Outing Club.

Pittsfield Council Says 'Yes' to Soccer at Crane Park

The pitch will have the logos of the city and the US. and Massachusetts soccer associations. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is gladly accepting a "mini-pitch" from the U.S. Soccer Foundation to bring games back to Crane Park. 

Fueling excitement around the World Cup, U.S. Soccer has been working with the Massachusetts Youth Soccer League to make these facilities available to 20 communities — one of which will be at the park at the intersection of Benedict Road and Springside Avenue. 

The City Council accepted the gift on Tuesday during its regular meeting. 

A mini pitch is a compact, modular field typically used for soccer, and it can also accommodate inline skates. It has a galvanized steel border with built-in goals and a rubber plastic surface that is clicked together; installed on the existing inline hockey court. 

Ward 2 Councilor Cameron Cunningham said he has gone door to door speaking with nearby residents, and they are "really excited" about the upgrade. He also sees it as a great addition. 

"They say that nobody really uses the court a ton now, and they are excited to see kids back on there playing," he said. 

Decades ago, the Crane Park facility was a wading pool. It closed in 1980, and before the turn of the century, it was filled in and marked for hockey. 

Parks, Open Space, and Natural Resources Manager James McGrath explained that the wooden border around the rink is showing its age, has been vandalized and tagged, and the facility is seeing a "real decline" in use. 

"This would seem to be an appropriate spot for us to remove the board system that's in place and install the mini pitch system through this grant," he said.
