The SteepleCats & New England Collegiate Baseball League are planning several special events

The North Adams SteepleCats of the 12-team New England Collegiate Baseball League are planning several special events for this weekend’s upcoming home stand. First, on Friday June 15 when the ‘Cats take on their southern division rivals the Torrington Twisters it’s Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts night at the ballpark. MCLA is North Adams’ only accredited four-year collegiate institution. Special events, giveaways, and guests are planned throughout the evening. Later that weekend, on Father’s Day, Sunday June 17, the SteepleCats join the fight against prostate cancer, sponsoring Men’s Health night at Joe Wolfe Field in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of America. North Adams players will wear blue wristbands in a show of support for those fighting the disease, and information will be available about preventative measures men can take to avoid being stricken. Admission to all SteepleCats home games is $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and $1 for children. All games begin at 7pm, with gates open at 6pm. The boys in black and gold are off to a blistering start in 2007, winners of three of their first four games, currently 2nd in the NECBL’s Southern Division. Ozzie Borrell has been the hitting star, compiling a .500 average with four extra base hits through four games. Robert Germane has dazzled on the hill, earning a save on opening night against Pittsfield, and then twirling a complete game shutout against Vermont on Monday. In 10 innings pitched, Germane has a perfect 0.00 ERA. He has allowed only four base runners, and an average against of .091.

North Adams School Committee Applauds Award Winner, Hears Budget

Superintendent Timothy Callahan presents his first Superintendent's Award to Brayden Canales. 
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Committee on Tuesday voted to send a recommending fiscal 2027 budget to a public hearing and congratulated the newest recipient of the Superintendent's Award. 
 
Drury High School senior Brayden Canales is graduating at the top of his class with 33 college credits and a grade-point average of 4.3.
 
"In addition to his impressive list of college courses, he has rounded out his transcript with several Advanced Placement and project based learning courses," said Superintendent Timothy Callahan, adding, "I had the honor to be Brayden's principal when he began a Drury."
 
Canales is a member of both the Nu Sigma and Pro Merito honor societies and received the Principal's Award for having the top five average in his class all four years and the Rensselaer (N.Y.) Institute of Technology award for science and math as a junior outside of the classroom.
 
He's also been a member of the soccer, hockey and baseball teams and this year was presented the Berkshire County Ice Hockey Officials Association's Sportsmanship Award for his leadership. Canales has also been a peer mediator, student ambassador, among other activities.  
 
He plans to pursue a major in architecture but has not yet selected a college. 
 
The Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents Certificate of Academic Excellence is awarded to students who have achieved not only academically but in leadership and community service.
