Harvard Dean to Facilitate Forum on U.S. Education

GREAT BARRINGTON – Ellen Condliffe Lagemann, Bard Center Distinguished Fellow at Simon's Rock, will present a faculty forum titled "What's the Matter with American Education ... Really?" The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m., in Blodgett House. Lagemann was dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education She was president of the Spencer Foundation in Chicago and longtime faculty member of the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University, where she was the founding chair of the department of humanities and the social sciences and director of the Center for the Study of American Culture and Education. She also taught at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she edited the Teachers College Record and was a member of the university's department of history. Lagemann has served as president of the National Academy of Education, now based at the National Research Council in Washington, D.C., and has been a member of many national boards and committees, including the Russell Sage Foundation and Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, Calif. She is currently co-chairman of the National Research Council'’s Committee on Teacher Preparation, and previously served on a number of other NRC committees. She is the author or editor of nine books, including, most recently, "An Elusive Science: The Troubling History of Education Research." She began her career as a high school social studies teacher. While holding her appointment at the Bard Center, Lagemann is on leave from Harvard, where she also is the Charles Warren Professor of the History of Education.

Bianchi-Barbarotta Foundation Holds Awards Banquet

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Bianchi-Barbarotta Foundation Friday honored outstanding contributors to the Berkshire County sports scene at its third annual Awards Dinner at the Polish Falcon Club.
 
The foundation supports youth sports throughout the county each year.
 
In 2025-26, those donations totaled more than $30,000 to groups ranging from youth football and cheerleading programs, Pittsfield Little League, Northern Berkshire Softball and the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club Recreation Therapy Program, to name a few.
 
Funds raised by the foundation also go to support its annual Vera Barborotta Memorial Sportsman Scholarship, which this year went to Lee High School graduate Joey Abderhalden and Taconic grad Madeline Harrington.
 
Two other recently graduated high school standout athletes were recognized as winners of the Al Bianchi Memorial Athletes of the Year: Madison McCarthy and Cooper Calvert, both of Wahconah Regional High School.
 
Pittsfield High School girls basketball coach Kristy Conyers and Hoosac Valley boys basketball coach Matt Larabee received the foundation's Coach of the Year Awards.
 
John Castonguay received the Bianchi-Barbarotta Foundation Living Legend Award. A.J. Ziter took home the Connie Bianchi Memorial Award of Merit. And Mark Moulton rounded out the honorees with the foundation's Volunteer of the Year Award.
