WILLIAMSTOWN – Williams women's lacrosse (2-6, 1-5 NESCAC) lost 14-6 to archrival Amherst (9-1, 5-1 NESCAC) in a home contest on Lamb Field on Saturday.

Sophomore Alice Nelson and junior Julia Nawrocki led the Ephs offence with two goals apiece, while Mary Noonan, Christina Hopkins, Amy Craig, and Robyn Lightner netted two each the Lord Jeffs.

Amherst came out strong, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the contest. The Ephs first goal came unassisted from junior Britt Spackman at 21:05 to make the sore 2-1. However, Amherst responded, netting a goal 5 minutes later. Junior Julia Nawrocki scored the Ephs second goal off a free position shot at 9:32. The Lord Jeffs' offense put pressure on the Ephs in the last ten minutes of the half, scoring 5 more goals to gain an 8-2 advantage.

Amherst scored two goals to start the second half before Ephs sophomore Alice Nelson netted a goal off a pass from fellow sophomore Tina Nawrocki at 22:36. Nelson scored her second goal off a free position shot 10 minutes later, but not before Amherst had scored three more unassisted goals.

Nawrocki scored off a pass from senior Sarah du Pont at 10:15 to close out the Ephs scoring. The Lord Jeffs sealed the victory with two more goals in the last 10 minutes of play to bring the final score to 14-6.

Ephs head coach Chris Mason commended Amherst for "their good pressure and hustle," adding "We went into the game nervous and tentative, and needed to bring some of the intensity from our practices into the game."

Williams out shot the Lord Jeffs 27-25, but their keeper Linda McEvoy made 15 saves. Ephs goalie and freshman Julia Schreiber made five saves.

Mason also applauded junior Lizzy Burns for her play in the midfield remarking that "she forced many turnovers and was great on draw control."

Williams will next host Endicott on Monday, April 14, at 4:15 p.m.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
