BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Williams College baseball team (10-5, 3-0) extended their winning streak to ten with a 9-8 win over Babson College Sunday afternoon. The Ephs, who were playing in the first game since returning from Arizona, got six strong innings from senior captain Ben Horowitz and an impressive 1 2/3 inning save from fellow senior Zach Stone in the win.

"We played good defense today and had two excellent performances on the mound, and when you can have both those things, you have a great chance to win," said head coach Bill Barrale. "It was nice to get a win while making the transition from Arizona to New England today, and to do it on the road against a good team makes it even better."

The Ephs looked poised to continue their strong offensive production as they scored three runs in both of the first two innings. Junior Robin Allemand gave the Ephs a 6-2 lead in the second inning with a two run homer to center, and finished 2-5 with a run on the day.

After the Ephs scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead, the Beavers started to mount a comeback. Babson scored three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth, and found themselves only down one at 9-8.

It was at this point that the Ephs turned to their strong senior class, as Stone came in with one out in the eighth and struck out two Beaver batters to end the threat. In the ninth, Stone allowed a one-out single but forced a double play groundball to end the contest and give the Ephs a victory in their New England debut.

Stepping up for the Ephs on Sunday, were Horowitz, who allowed only four hits while striking out two in the win, and Stone who went 2-4 with an RBI at the plate. Junior Al Matthews was also impressive, as he went 1-3 with 3 RBI.

Next up for the Ephs is a 4 PM game at Fordham April 7th and an important NESCAC series against archrival Amherst in the home opener April 11th.

Pittsfield Council Says 'Yes' to Soccer at Crane Park

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

The pitch will have the logos of the city and the US. and Massachusetts soccer associations.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is gladly accepting a "mini-pitch" from the U.S. Soccer Foundation to bring games back to Crane Park.

Fueling excitement around the World Cup, U.S. Soccer has been working with the Massachusetts Youth Soccer League to make these facilities available to 20 communities — one of which will be at the park at the intersection of Benedict Road and Springside Avenue.

The City Council accepted the gift on Tuesday during its regular meeting.

A mini pitch is a compact, modular field typically used for soccer, and it can also accommodate inline skates. It has a galvanized steel border with built-in goals and a rubber plastic surface that is clicked together; installed on the existing inline hockey court.

Ward 2 Councilor Cameron Cunningham said he has gone door to door speaking with nearby residents, and they are "really excited" about the upgrade. He also sees it as a great addition.

"They say that nobody really uses the court a ton now, and they are excited to see kids back on there playing," he said.

Decades ago, the Crane Park facility was a wading pool. It closed in 1980, and before the turn of the century, it was filled in and marked for hockey.

Parks, Open Space, and Natural Resources Manager James McGrath explained that the wooden border around the rink is showing its age, has been vandalized and tagged, and the facility is seeing a "real decline" in use.

"This would seem to be an appropriate spot for us to remove the board system that's in place and install the mini pitch system through this grant," he said.
