NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - REACH for Community Health, the community health education arm of North Adams Regional Hospital, will sponsor its sixth Girls’ Night Out on Monday, April 27, in the North Adams Regional Hospital main lobby from 5:30-7:30 p.m. REACH for Breast Health is hosting a Hawaiian luau to get the message out about women’s health.

Women of all ages are invited to attend this free event. There will be healthy Hawaiian snacks and beverages available and information on health and wellness and issues of special importance to women. Call REACH at (413) 664-5236 for more information.

“Spring is here, and what better way to welcome the warm weather than with a Hawaiian luau,” said Program Manager Polly Macpherson. “Girls’ Night Out is a fun event, but at the same time emphasizes the many elements that make up a woman’s overall health and well-being.”

Women will have the opportunity to talk to a wide range of professionals about their health. Registered Dietitians Kristin Irace and Jaimi Tudor will offer tips on what to eat while on vacation and healthy Hawaii-influenced recipes. The American Cancer Society will have resource materials on women and cancer. Staff from the hospital’s Medical Imaging Department will be on hand to schedule an appointment for those over 40 who have not had a mammogram this year. There will be information available on bone density and tobacco cessation as well.

The Clip Shop of Williamstown will have representatives available to do mini-facials. Massage therapists from In Touch Day Spa will offer a 10-minute complimentary massage. These services will be on a first-come, first-served basis and attendees should sign up when they arrive. Avon will have representatives available for beauty consults. Michelle Burro will be on hand to check your “tune” using tuning forks to help individuals achieve balance. Finally, Maggie Bittman will take you on a virtual trip to Hawaii with her stress reduction class.

New to this event will be the North Adams Regional Hospital Rehabilitation Department. Staff from the department will be on hand to check proper posture and address questions and concerns.

“We are on the lookout for a hula instructor who can give a short lesson,” said Macpherson. “If we don’t succeed in finding an instructor we will still feature some sort of movement class. When you are forming a health plan for yourself, exercise or some sort of movement is an important component.”

SteepleCats' Late Rally Falls Short Against Newport

By Ben McDonoughFor iBerkshires.com
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The North Adams SteepleCats had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning but could not complete the comeback, falling to the Newport Gulls, 5-1, at Joe Wolfe Field on Tuesday night.

The game got off to a disastrous start for North Adams as Newport scored twice in the opening inning without recording a hit. SteepleCats starter Samuel Formus struggled with his command, issuing three walks to begin the game. A fielder's choice plated the first run before a sacrifice fly from Cole Johnson made it 2-0.

Despite the rocky opening frame, North Adams' pitching staff settled in. Tyler Tedeschi entered in the first inning and immediately escaped further trouble by striking out Mason Ligenza with the bases loaded. Tedeschi then tossed 3 and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four and repeatedly working around traffic.

The SteepleCats' offense, meanwhile, was quiet early against Newport starter Burkley Bounds. North Adams did not collect its first hit until the fourth inning.

That spark came off the bat of Evan Meier, who ripped a double that hugged the third-base line and barely stayed fair. One batter later, Nelphie Lopez delivered the SteepleCats' biggest hit of the night, lining an RBI single to right field to score Meier and cut the deficit to 2-1.

The momentum was short-lived, however. Sean Stephenson followed by grounding into his second double play of the evening, ending the threat.

Newport answered in the fifth. Cade Brown singled into left-center field and promptly stole second base. After advancing to third on a flyout, Brown crossed the plate on a passed ball to extend the Gulls' lead to 3-1.
