Turtle Island Quartet to perform in Troy

Troy, NY - On Saturday, March 1 at 8 P.M., a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings will take the stage at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has called them “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground—authentic and passionate--a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today.” Turtle Island String Quartet has been on a musical journey since the mid 1980s, through forays into Folk and Bluegrass, Swing Jazz, Be-Bop, Classical Indian forms, Funk and R&B, New Age, Rock and Hip-Hop, Bossa Nova and Salsa. At the same time, they continue to revive improvisational and compositional chamber traditions that have not been explored by string players for nearly 200 years. This performance, entitled “Blue in Green” is dedicated to the music of Miles Davis, the great jazz trumpeter and relentless iconoclast. The Turtle Island String Quartet uses the legendary best-selling jazz recording of all time, Kind of Blue, as the centerpiece for a program that explores the deep roots from which this masterpiece grew, as well as the subsequent blossoming of musical genres that followed. A word about Miles Davis … He began as a teenage Juilliard Conservatory dropout who, along with his mentors, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, shook the jazz world to its core with the explosion of bebop in the forties. With extensive conservatory training, each Turtle Island member is accomplished in improvisation, composition and arranging. Grammy-nominated David Balakrishnan (violin, baritone violin) is the founder, leader and primary composer/arranger of the group. Balakrishnan has produced several recordings, a movie soundtrack, and collaborations with groups like the Modern Jazz Quartet and the Manhattan Transfer. He has also received numerous composing grants. He has recently completed a 6-year term on the Board of Directors of Chamber Music America. Evan Price (violin) has performed with some of the masters of fiddle lore including Stephane Grappelli, Johnny Frigo, Claude “Fiddler” Williams, Johnny Gimble, Mark O’Connor, Buddy Spicher, Vassar Clements and Alasdair Fraser. He has won several fiddle championships. In addition to performing with TISQ, Evan is an active performer with other Bay Area groups, most notably the Hot Club of San Francisco, a gypsy swing band. Danny Seidenberg (viola) has performed with the American Ballet Theater, New York City Opera, American Symphony Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony, Orchestra of St. Lukes, New York City Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Philharmonia Virtuosi, Solisti New York, Dance Theater of Harlem, Soviet Émigré Orchestra, as well as with many Broadway shows. He has toured, performed and recorded with Steve Reich, the Village People, Liza Minelli, Tony Bennett, James Brown, Richie Havens, and Led Zeppelin. He is also an accomplished pianist. With Turtle Island, Danny has become a performer, composer, arranger and jazz educator of international stature. Mark Summer (cello) is regarded as one of the outstanding jazz cellists of our time, thanks to his phenomenal percussion and pizzicato techniques. Mark performs with the Chamber Symphony of San Francisco, the Oakland Symphony, the Oakland Ballet and contemporary music ensemble Earplay. He has been featured in Strings and Bass Player magazine and has published two pieces for solo cello. He has recorded on numerous motion picture soundtracks and performed and recorded with Linda Ronstadt, singer Toni Childs, Jeff Tamelier of Tower of Power, saxophonist Kirk Whalum and guitarist Will Ackerman. Turtle Island String Quartet has a phenomenal international appeal, particularly in Europe where chamber music and sporting events go hand in hand. The group continues to hone its skills through unusual and endemic “re-compositions” of works by the “old masters”, through the development of repertory by some of today’s cutting edge young composers, through performances and recordings with major symphonic ensembles, and through a determined educational commitment. Reserved seats for Turtle Island String Quartet are $24 and $21 and may be purchased by calling the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Box Office at (518) 273-0038. The Music Hall Box Office opens one hour prior to the performance. Otherwise, Box Office operations are handled at its business office at 7 State Street, Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on show days only. Tickets can also be purchased online and The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall’s full season schedule can be viewed at www.troymusichall.org. North Adams Jewelry Store Has New Owner

By Breanna SteeleiBerkshires Staff

Cheryl Coppens put out a call for someone to take over the jewelry business she began last spring  — jewelry maker Alexandra Padilla answered the call.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Artful Jeweler has a new owner who is looking to expand its offerings.

Cheryl Coppens opened the jewelry store in May, showcasing local artists, offering fine jewelry, and jewelry repair.

But a new grandson in Texas, and the difficulties in flying back and forth to see him, had her looking to move closer to him.

Last month, she posted on the business's Facebook that she wanted someone to take over the space and continue the venture. Alexandra Padilla reached out to her and Coppens said she met all her criteria she was looking for in anew owner.

"You have to really want to be in retail. You have to want to be in this community, priced where people can afford it. Alex is native to North Adams. Her husband, she's got two great kids, so it just felt like they would be able to continue the store," Coppens said. "So the criteria really was somebody that would work the store, not somebody that would just come in and hire employees. I didn't want that."

Padilla started taking over the store in the beginning of December. She has been selling jewelry for about three years, and has an online shop, and has worked in wholesale jewelry for about 15 years.

"I always wanted to have my own thing on it, and I wanted to bring something new, and I want to involve my family, my kids do something, and I want to be independent," she said.

Now Padilla showcases her jewelry in the Ashland Street store and plans to keep some of the local artists' items, like stained glass made by Coppens' mother.

Padilla customizes jewelry and tailors pieces to her customers.

She plans to work around her job at Berkshire County Head Start so she can open store for more hours.

She also plans to redesign the store a little bit and bring in a couple more lines, like more rings and pearls.

The store is open on Saturdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays 9 to 2, Fridays 9 to 6, and Sundays 9 to 3. The store has also been open on Mondays 10  to 5 and Tuesdays 10  to 3 for the holidays.

Padilla thanks Coppens for trusting her and hopes customers continue to support the Artful Jeweler.

"Thank you for trusting me. I'm going to try and do my best and work hard to make it happen," she said. "This is our first time selling retail, so we hope the community supports us in here."

Coppens will be helping Padilla until she is comfortable operating the store on her own. She said it will continue to be a space of community support.
