Mrs. Frederick D. Shea Jr.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Carol Ann Field Shea, 78, of North Adams passed at home on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.

Carol was born in North Adams on Sept. 21, 1942, a daughter of the late Frank R. Field and Marie Ann Field St. Pierre.

As a young woman, she attended Drury High School. She was employed at Cornish Wire and Le Country Restaurant, both in Williamstown. Carol was also employed at the former Price Chopper as a cashier as well as other departments for 38-plus years. There, she was known for her friendly, spitfire, quick-witted personality. Carol was also a homemaker and caregiver to all of her family until her passing. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother.

Carol enjoyed tending to her home and yard. Pulling weeds and digging in the dirt were two of her greatest enjoyments. She loved her garden and flowers, blue hydrangeas being her favorite. Mom was known for her wonderful apple pies (which by the way, were made from scratch). She donated these to church bake sales, and they were usually the first ones sold.

Our mother was the strength and structure of our family for years. She always gave guidance and good advice with a kind heart through life’s challenges.

She married the love of her life, our father, Frederick D. Shea Jr., on May 9, 1959. They raised four beautiful children in their 56 years of marriage. She was our fathers "little chick-a-dee," our best friend, and our savior in more ways than one!

Carol is survived by her daughters Deborah Shea and her husband, Francis; her daughter Deidre Chilson; her son, Frederick D. Shea III and Karen Birch; her daughter Kathleen Bassette and her husband, David; her two brothers, Brent Field and his wife, Lorrie, and Frank Field and his wife, Mary; and many nieces and nephews. Carol also leaves nine grandchildren, Jessica Stanley, Frank Shea, James Shea, Laura Shea, Blair Shea, Jenny Shea, Amanda Foster, Dalton Bassette, Meghan Birch, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Carol is predeceased by her husband and her parents; her brother Carl Field; two brothers-in-law, Rolando "Nino: Bernadara and Gerald Barschdorf; her sister Claire Barschdorf, and son-in-law, David F. Chilson.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A private gathering took place at the family home. Memorial donations are suggested for PopCares or to the Hospice of the Berkshires through the Flynn & Dagnoli Funeral Home, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.

Sometimes we look at obituary's and get a warm fuzzy feeling about the picture but cant quite determine until we read more, who a certain person is. I started reading OBITS religiously, for that reason. Your Mom, Wife, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, was a Friend to many. She didn't even know my name, nor I hers, but we would chat it up about our kids and their lives in the parking lot, as she would be, yes at times moving carts, getting a breath of fresh air. I soooo, looked forward to seeing her smiling face in Price Chopper. She was missed. Employees do make a difference, she surely did...My thoughts are with you all........

I'd like to extend my sincere condolences to Carol's family. I have many fond memories of her as we worked at Price Chopper together for many, many years. She was professional and proficient at her job yet her sense of humor is what most remember. She would pick up the phone and shout over the PA "Aflac" just like the duck on the commercials! It was hilarious. Personally, I loved her kind heart above all and her thirst for the simple joy's in life. I'll remember her always.

I am so sad to hear about Carol. My mom Jeanne McDonough worked with Carol for years at Price Chopper. My mom always talked so highly of Carol and she said they always had good times together back in the “old” Price Chopper days! May Carol Rest In Peace.
