Edward Stephen Olszowy

Edward Stephen Olszowy, 78, of 4 Richmond St., a longtime Adams Police officer, died early Wednesday morning at home. Born in Adams on April 6, 1927, son of John and Catherine Salamon Olszowy, he was a 1945 graduate of the former Adams High School, where he was a star athlete. He was named to the All Berkshire football and basketball teams, and had played basketball in the Boston Garden with the Western Massachusetts Championship Team. Following his military service, he attended both the University of Massachusetts and the former North Adams State College. He graduated from the Massachusetts Police Academy in 1967. He served with the Navy in the South Pacific and Guam during World War II. Mr. Olszowy first worked briefly from the Springfield Armory, and the former Railway Express in North Adams as a foreman for 10 years. He was named a provisional patrolman to the Adams Police Department in 1960, and was named a permanent patrolman in 1962, retiring in 1985. He was a communicant of the Parish of Notre Dame and St. Thomas Aquinas. He was a member of Post 160 American Legion and the Massachusetts Police Association. An avid golfer, he was a former member of Forest Park Country Club, where he served as vice president for two years, and was on its board of directors for 10 years. He leaves a daughter, Kristina Levesque of Pownal, Vt.; a brother, John Olszowy of Boston, and three grandchildren. He also leaves his longtime companion, Diane LaPort, with whom he resided. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Edward S. Olszowy will be Saturday, May 21, at 11 from the AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St. Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at noon in Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs Church, Adams, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Parishes of Notre Dame & St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Stanislaus Kostka. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Christian Children's Fund through the funeral home.
