Orville Henry Barnes Jr.

Orville Henry Barnes Jr., 86, of Englewood, Fla., formerly of Great Barrington, died early Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Susan Pullaro of 396 Crane Ave., Pittsfield. Born in Torrington, Conn., on June 14, 1919, son of Orville H. Barnes Sr. and Marion Dutton Barnes, he grew up in Monterey and attended schools in Great Barrington. He attended the former Bob Jones University in Cleveland, Tenn., the former Berkshire Business College in Pittsfield, Lowell Institute of Technology and Army Administrator School. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served in the 224th division and was discharged with the rank of sergeant. Mr. Barnes was employed by the state Department of Public Works for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He was a bridge, highway construction and maintenance district area engineer and registered land surveyor, and his last position was as assistant state aid engineer to Myles Stevens for South Berkshire. He also served as a Berkshire County sheriff's deputy. He enjoyed game hunting, fishing, foraging, golfing, baseball and gardening, and founded the Frog Hollow Tree Nursery in Great Barrington. He could play any instrument, but especially enjoyed the piano. He sang in church choirs, musicals and home parlors. He was a member and actor for the Barrington Town Players in the 1950s. In his retirement, he discovered drawing, acrylic painting and bridge. His first wife, the former Hope Anne Johnson, died in 1998. His wife, the former Barbara Jean Buccino, died June 29, 1999. Besides his daughter, of Pittsfield, he leaves a son, Bruce F. Barnes of Brooksville, Fla.; two other daughters, Rebecca J. Namislo of Stockbridge and Sarah G. Formel of Housatonic; two sisters, Helen Hubbard of Fairfield, Conn., and Doris Rogers of Lake Wales, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial gathering to celebrate the life of Orville Barnes Jr. will be conducted Sunday, July 10, 2005, at 3 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington by the Rev. Alan Macy. Burial will be at a later date in Torrington, Conn. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 until the time of the service at the funeral home. He leaves his daughter-in-law, Jane; sons-in-law, James N. Pullaro and Mark Formel; 10 grandchildren, Jesse and Rachel Barnes, David and Amelia Pullaro, Toby and Shannon Namislo, and Mark Jr., Adrienne, Timothy and Ella Formel, and two great-grandchildren, Tylor and Shayla Pullaro.
