Arthur Moses Montgomery

Arthur Moses Montgomery, 93, died Wednesday at Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Milltown, New Brunswick, Canada, on Dec. 23, 1911, son of Moses Lever and Ethel Clark Montgomery, he was educated there. He had lived in Housatonic for 45 years. He and his family moved there in 1960 from Upper Mills, New Brunswick. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Mr. Montgomery was employed as a plumber for M.T. Cavanaugh and retired in 1978. While in Canada, he owned the Upper Mills General Store, and was postmaster in the village for 15 years. He had also worked in the Canadian cotton mills in Milltown at the age of 14. He was an active member of the Housatonic United Methodist Church for many years. An avid sports fan, he played hockey for Pecks Rexall in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, in the 1930s. He was a Mason for 60 years and a past member and past master of the Alley Lodge AF & AM in St. Stephen. He and his wife of 69 years, the former Thelma Marie Watters, were married Dec. 20, 1935. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Pauline M. Montgomery of Housatonic and Constance A. DelMasto of Sheffield; four sons, Robert Montgomery of Canaan, Conn., John Montgomery of Pittsfield, Paul Montgomery of Egremont and Timothy Montgomery of New York City; a brother, Clark Montgomery of Greenwood, Nova Scotia; two sisters, Vera Waters and Hazel Babcock of St. Stephen, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two other sons, Peter and Allan. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Arthur M. Montgomery will be Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at 10 at the Housatonic United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Rogers, pastor. Private burial will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends today, Friday, Aug. 19, from 4 to 7 at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington. Expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the United Methodist Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home. He also leaves his beloved dachshund, Misty. He was predeceased by his grandson, Robert Montgomery, and four sisters, Izetta Beck, Irene Moffatt, Thelma Woods and Doris Farthing.
