Robert Patrick Scanlon

Robert Patrick Scanlon, 39, of 102 Cross St., Bennington, Vt., formerly of North Adams, died as a result of diving into the Hoosic River in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., to save the life of Michael Hackett. Born in Holyoke on Oct. 6, 1966, son of Patricia Gougen Scanlon and the late Robert Paul Scanlon, he attended schools in North Adams and was a 1984 graduate of Drury High School. He also graduated in 1994 from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he earned degrees in English and political science and was a member of the rugby team. Since 2003, Mr. Scanlon had been a partner in the Bennington law firm of Barr, Sternberg, Moss, Lawrence, Silver, Saltonstall & Scanlon. He began with the firm, then known as Barr Sternberg, in 1996 as a law clerk. He completed a four-year clerkship and apprenticeship, which included schooling at Albany Law School. He passed the Vermont Bar examination on his first try in 2001 and was a member of the bars of the Vermont Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court of Vermont. His areas of concentration included criminal defense and personal injury. He was a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Vermont Trail Lawyers Association, the Vermont Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Vermont Bar Association and the Bennington County Bar Association, where he served in several leadership positions. He was a master-level Mason with the Mount Anthony Masonic Lodge in Bennington and a member of the Bennington and North Adams lodges of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He enjoyed camping, hiking, four-wheeling and snowshoeing. Besides his mother, of Clarksburg, he leaves two sons, Robert Paul Scanlon and Matthew John Scanlon, both of North Adams; two brothers, Sean Scanlon and James Scanlon, both of Wilmington, N.C., and his former wife, Mary Michalenko Scanlon of North Adams. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Attorney Robert Patrick Scanlon will be Thursday at 10 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Oct. 12, from 4 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested for the Robert P. Scanlon Children's Education fund through the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Erica Scanlon, several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was a devoted and loving father.
