Joyce Boschen

Joyce Boschen, 78, of Shaw Road died Oct. 14 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where she had been in a coma since Aug. 29 following surgery for a heart attack. Born in New London, Conn., on Oct. 16, 1928, daughter of Louis and Martha Pizer, she grew up in New Britain, Conn., and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Central Connecticut State University. She did postgraduate work at the University of Connecticut, where she received a certificate in advanced graduate standing, a professional diploma. She also took graduate courses at Southern Connecticut State University and at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, and studied at IS183 Art School of the Berkshires in Interlaken. Mrs. Boschen was a certified art teacher in both Massachusetts and Connecticut, and taught art in the Central Berkshire School District for 26 years. She also taught in the New Britain School System and was the art supervisor in the Enfield (Conn.) School System. After retirement, she taught art at St. Agnes' School in Dalton and gave private lessons in her studio at her home in Windsor. She was published in various education and arts education journals, and was the first recipient of the Outstanding Arts Educator in Massachusetts awarded by the Massachusetts Alliance for Arts Education. She was a member of the Dalton Art Guild and the Hilltown Artisans Association, and participated in art shows in Berkshire and Hampden counties, particularly in watercolor. Her paintings are hanging in businesses and private homes throughout the country. Mrs. Boschen was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Pittsfield, the Capital District Humanist Society in Albany, N.Y., the Esperanto League for North America, the Citizens for Global Solutions, the Coalition for Democratic World Government, and the Universal Esperanto Association as well as the Nature Conservancy and the Natural Resources Defense Council. She was a member of the Votre Soirée ballroom dancing club. She traveled extensively throughout the world, largely in conjunction with participation in the Esperanto Congresses, and the Humanist and World Federal Conferences. She and her husband, Allan Boschen, were married 41 years. Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Shirley Traite of Waltham; a son, Daniel Boschen of Beverly; a brother, Arnold Pizer of Pittsford, N.Y.; and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Joyce Boschen, who died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, will be celebrated at the Unitarian-Universalist Church at 175 Wendell Ave. in Pittsfield on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private at Shaw Road Cemetery in Windsor at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231, or to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, Attn: Essential Thronbocythemia, P.O. Box 1968, Danbury, CT 06813-1968. She was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Pizer.
