John C. Harvey

John C. Harvey, 89, of 3 Oxbow Road, died Friday at home. He was manager of the former Jug End Resort for more than 30 years, and a tree warden and volunteer fireman for the town of Egremont, both for more than 50 years. Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., on Jan. 8, 1918, son of John E. and Gretchen Stemmer Harvey, he moved to South Berkshire at the age of 10 and graduated from the former Searles High School in Great Barrington. A Coast Guard veteran of World War II, he served on the USS Merrill from 1942 to 1945 as a gunner's mate, second class, and made 22 trips across the ocean. Mr. Harvey was employed by the former Berkshire Manufacturing Co. as a machinist for more than 12 years. He was a member of the Berkshire County Deputy Sheriffs Organization; the Knights of Columbus, Mount Everett Council 513; and James A. Modolo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8348. He sang with the Wadsworth Band, of which he was a member, at Onota Lake in Pittsfield. Mr. Harvey was a national champion skeet shooter and gave lessons at Jug End. He enjoyed hunting, particularly for pheasants, and ice fishing. A golfer, he played in the Pro-Am in Hartford, Conn., in 1974. His wife, the former Margaret Larkin, died Aug. 8, 1987. They were married Nov. 28, 1947, at St. Peter's Church in Great Barrington. He leaves three sons, Edward Harvey of North Egremont, and John Harvey and Jeffrey Harvey, both of Hillsdale, N.Y.; two sisters, Frances Gennari of Housatonic and Roswell, Ga., and Evelyn "Tody" Boinay of of Texas; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for John C. "Jack" Harvey, who died Friday, April 13, 2007, will be conducted Thursday, April 19, at 10 a.m. at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. William Murphy. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Following the funeral, friends are invited to lunch at the VFW in Great Barrington. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in Jack's memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires and they can be made in Berkshares, in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He shot his first deer at the age of 8 and assisted Babe Ruth in shooting a deer to take back to New York. He also leaves two daughters-in-law, Louann (Edward) and Josie Slavinski (John); five grandchildren, Kim, Jen, Sonny, Jackie and Jeff; and three great-grandchildren, Hunter, Joey and Andrew. A brother, Edward Harvey, died at the age of 8.
