Myrtle Hadsell

Myrtle Hadsell, 78, of Home Road died Thursday at home. Born in Sharon, Conn., on Nov. 26, 1928, daughter of Pierre and Myrtle Ball Thomen, she attended Salisbury Central School in Lakeville, Conn. In 1946, she moved from Salisbury to Sheffield. Mrs. Hadsell was employed by Berkshire School in the food service department for five years, retiring in 2000. Before that, she was a caregiver for the late Walter Koladza and worked 15 years as a machine operator at Becton-Dickenson Manufacturing Co. in Canaan, Conn. In her younger years, she worked at the former Red Barn and at the former Melvin's Drug Store, both in Great Barrington. She enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, making ceramics and taking trips to Foxwoods Resort Casino. Her husband, Robert Hadsell Sr., whom she married June 14, 1965, died April 1, 2004. She leaves five daughters, Sandra Pothul and Lisa Hadsell, both of Sheffield, Patricia Taylor of Jacksonville, N.C., Jane Archambeau of Becket and Deborah Spadaccini of Florence; four sons, Jason Hadsell of Lee, Ronald Shaw of Great Barrington, Robert Shaw of Shelby, N.C., and David Shaw of Dover, Del.; a stepson, Robert Hadsell Jr. of Lee; two stepdaughters, Teresa Armstrong of Stockbridge and Linda Karch of Pittsfield; a brother, Norman Thomen of Great Barrington; a sister, Henrietta Quinion of Canaan, Conn.; 29 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by another stepdaughter, Elizabeth Hadsell. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Myrtle Hadsell, who died Thursday, July 12, 2007, will be conducted Wednesday, July 18, at 1:30 p.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington by the Rev. Betty LeGeyt. Burial will follow in Sheffield Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad or Shriners' Hospital through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Despite the many hours spent working, Myrtle was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She cherished her family, and together they raised chickens and geese.
