Charles W. O'Brien

Charles W. O'Brien, 66, of Marble Street died Thursday at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington after a long illness. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 6, 1940, son of John J. and Elizabeth Keegan O'Brien, he attended Lenox schools and was a 1960 graduate of the former Lenox High School, where he played on the varsity basketball, baseball and soccer teams. He served in the Army from 1961 to 1963, much of that time in Korea. Mr. O'Brien was employed by General Electric Co. as an assembler in the power transformer and ordnance divisions for 25 years, retiring in 1999. He later worked as a groundskeeper at Eastover Resort and as a greenskeeper at Cranwell Golf Course. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Lee and an adorer at its Our Lady's Oratory chapel. He enjoyed playing golf, and in his younger years, played organized softball. He and his wife, the former Ann L. Menatti, were married May 25, 1968, at St. Mary's Church. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Mathew P. O'Brien of Minneapolis and Patrick J. O'Brien of Atlanta; two daughters, Lisa L. Griffin and Dana Oliva, both of Lee; a brother, Richard E. O'Brien of Lenox; a sister, Barbara E. Gaherty of Lenox; and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Charles W. "Chuck" O'Brien, who died Sept. 27, 2007, will be Monday at 10 a.m. at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus pastor of St. Ann's Church in Lenox. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lee Cal Ripken Baseball League or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, both in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240. He leaves two beloved grandchildren, Maya Jolie and Colin Charles O'Brien of Minneapolis; two daughters-in-law, Rhonda and Rachael O'Brien; and two sons-in-law, Dennis Griffin and Frank Oliva. He was a devoted husband and loving father, a loyal brother and a true and generous friend. A lifelong sports fan, he attended sporting events of all levels and rarely missed a Lee High School home football game.
