Robert Macy Jr., 65
SHEFFIELD â€' Robert Macy Jr., 65, of Berkshire School Road died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at home.
Born in Valdosta, Ga., on March 27, 1943, son of Helen L. Taylor Macy of Great Barrington and the late Robert Macy Sr., he attended Sheffield Center School and Mount Everett Regional School and was a graduate of Tyler (Texas) Junior College. He later graduated from the University of New Haven, Conn., earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, and returned to Sheffield in 1978.
An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he served with 66th Engineer Company until being honorably discharged in 1970.
Mr. Macy was self-employed as a registered land surveyor, retiring in 2000. He also served as an officer in the Civil Engineer Corps of the Naval Reserve for 10 years.
He was a member and past master of Cincinnatus Masonic Lodge AF & AM and the James A. Modolo VFW Post 8348 in Great Barrington. He also was a member of the Sheffield American Legion Post 340 and the Sheffield Gun Club. He enjoyed target shooting, NASCAR races, movies, listening to 1950s and 1960s music, breakfast with the group at the Sunrise Diner, Mexican food, whole-belly clams on his birthday and letting his seven "furry" grandchildren jump on his lap.
Besides his mother, he leaves his daughter, Sarah W. Macy of Sheffield; his son, Robert S. Macy and his wife, Amy, of Atlanta; a brother, Thomas D. Macy and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Sheffield; a sister, Julianne Ruske and her husband, Robin, of South Carolina; a nephew, Michael T. Macy and his wife, Dorothy, of Dalton and his former wife, Helen D. Riou Macy of Ashley Falls.
FUNERAL NOTICE â€' The family of the late Robert Macy Jr. invites everyone to join them for a service celebrating his life on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. at Finnerty and Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington, conducted by the Rev. Jill Graham, pastor of Old Parish Church in Sheffield. Burial with military honors will follow in Sheffield Center Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Monday, Aug. 11, from 5 until 7: at the funeral home.
