Sol Zaret, 91
GREAT BARRINGTON — Sol Zaret, 91, of Great Barrington died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, under hospice care, surrounded by family.
Born on Aug. 22, 1917, he graduated from Brooklyn (N.Y.) College, earning degrees in physics and engineering.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served with Signal Corps at the Pentagon.
Mr. Zaret and a partner founded Vinytex Co. in Hempstead, N.Y., after the war. They invented a heat-sealing process for vinyl products that was the forerunner of supplying a new type of stationery products for industry and banks.
After retiring, he spent most of his time researching and writing papers on the origins of the universe. While not a religious observer, his family said he practiced what religion preaches — love, compassion, generosity and an abiding respect for all people. He fought the good fight for all causes demanding civil rights and human dignity, ready to protest what he thought were decisions leading the country down the wrong path. He was an avid proponent of women's rights all his life.
Besides his wife, Mickey Zaret, he leaves three sons, David Zaret and his wife, Julie Knost, of Indiana, Joshua Zaret and his wife, Elisabeth Karlin, of New York City and Peter Zaret and his wife, Marilyn, and two adored grandchildren, Anna and Max Zaret.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A service celebrating the life of Sol Zaret will be held on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 11 from Finnerty and Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington. Burial will follow in Corashire Cemetery in Monterey.
