As we head into the final full week of the regular season for most fall sports, this week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Athletes of the Week have their respective teams in position to go for high seeds in the Western Massachusetts playoffs.

The Hoosac Valley football team Friday withstood a tough test against Chicopee, overcoming a third-quarter deficit to win by a touchdown and improve to 7-0 this fall.

Shaun Kastner is a big part of the reason why Hoosac Valley is one win away from a perfect regular season.

On Friday, he ran for 216 yards and scored four of his team's five touchdowns in a 35-28 victory.

Afterward, he said it was a team effort.

"My line blocked amazingly for me all night. All I had to do was get the ball, run up to the hole and make a cut,” he said. “We were all going crazy in the huddle. We were all cheering and yelling and ready for the next play.”

The Hurricanes wrap up their regular season on Friday at Renfrew Park under the lights against Ludlow.

Then Hoosac Valley gets a well-deserved week off, enjoying its bye week in the season's ninth week to give the 'Canes a little exta time to get ready for the playoffs.

The Mount Greylock girls soccer team has four games left, starting with a crucial Berkshire County North Division showdown against Wahconah in Williamstown on Monday night.

With a record of 11-2-1, the Mounties are playing to improve their tournament seeding over the next week and a half.

Senior Madison Ross has helped fuel a potent Mount Greylock offense, tying Clara McWeeny for the team lead with 17 goals.

In a 2-0 week this past week, she had a hat trick in an 8-1 win against Lee and a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over Monument Mountain.

"Clara and Maddie, you know, they’re quite a combination up there,” Mount Greylock coach Tom Ostheimer understated earlier this season. “They work well together.”
