Millionaires Beat Monument to Get Over .500

LENOX, Mass. – Cate Welch scored from the top of the 18 in the 74th minute to snap a 2-2 tie and send the Lenox girls soccer team on to a 3-2 win over Monument Mountain on Friday.

The same two helped Lenox take a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Elliot’s through ball was deflected to Welch, who put the ball in the net.

 

Four minutes later, the Millionaires went ahead by two goals when Elliot scored with an assist from Sarah Chevalier.

 

In the 26th minute, Sadie Raifstanger’s corner kick connected with Mallory Lucey, whose successful header got the Spartans on the board and made it a 2-1 game at half-time.

 

Monument then got the equalizer 12 minutes into the second half when Raifstanger set up Lucy Dohoney for a strike from outside the 18.

 

Although the Spartans controlled play most of the second half, keeper Audie Tresp helped keep the Millionaires in it, Lenox coach Nicole Gamberoni said.

 

“Audie Tresp in goal had an incredible game,” Gamberoni said. “She made some saves that we couldn’t even believe. After being out for the last two weeks due to an injury, she hopped in net like she never left. She was aggressive in coming out and helping our defense.”

 

After Welch scored the go-ahead goal with 6 minutes, 42 seconds left on the clock, the Millionaires were able to “hunker down” and hold on, Gamberoni said.

 

Lenox (4-3) goes to Pittsfield on Monday.

 

Monument Mountain (2-3) is at Wahconah on Monday.
