Mount Greylock, Monument Mountain Finish 2-3 at Western Mass

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Holyoke wrestling team Saturday took the final two championship bouts to pull away for the title by a 12-point margin over Mount Greylock at the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Championships.

 

Holyoke’s Jesus Morales took a 10-4 decision from the Mounties’ Logan O’Connell in the 215 final, and Parker Brunelle got a first period pin of Monument Mountain’s Ryan Murray in the championship match at 285 to seal the deal for the Knights.

 

Mount Greylock placed four wrestlers in the finals and came away with a pair of individual titles in posting the best team finish by a Berkshire County squad.

 

Maximus Soto won the 157 pound crown with a 10-5 win over Frontier’s Konnor James. Jacob Borowski earned the Mounties’ other title with a third-period pin of Monument Mountain’s Isaac Hartshorn.

 

The Spartans got two titles in their three finals appearances.

 

Mason St. Peter at 106 and Christopher St. Peter at 113 each earned a pin in the championship round for Monument Mountain.

 

Mount Everett sent two wrestlers to the finals, and each came away with a gold medal.

 

Max Manning pinned Southwick’s Aaron Petschke midway through the second period of their 150-pound final. At 165, the Eagles’ Ian Lanoue went the distance with Frontier’s Jacoby Merrill and prevailed, 12-10, as Mount Everett placed eighth in a 13-team field at the sectional.

 

All the finalists advance to next week’s D3 State Championships in Gloucester.

 

The third- and fourth-place finishers on Saturday at Taconic also move on to next week. Included in that group are: Mount Greylock’s Za’Qare Ryan (120), Mount Everett’s Yaritza Cruz-Bravo (126), Taconic’s Gavin Maffucio (138), Monument Mountain’s Sam Dignard (144), Mount Greylock’s Brian Liang (150), Mount Everett’s Tristan Pritchard (157), Mount Greylock’s Cesar Soto (165), Monument Mountain’s Cameron Knopf (165), Mount Everett’s Jonathan Fredsall (175) and Taconic’s Malikai Lytle (190).
