Mount Greylock Boys, Girls Tennis Top Pittsfield
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Brady Foehl was just sick after taking his first loss of the year earlier this spring against Pittsfield.
On Tuesday, he was just sick.
But he was not going to miss a chance to avenge that loss. And even when he was down, 5-3, in the third set, Foehl found a way to rally back for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, win over Evan Dempsey at No. 1 singles that keyed a 4-1 Mounties win.
"We had a lot of fans here today," Foehl said. "I had some supporters come out. I knew they wanted me to win.
"I've been battling an illness, too. I really wanted this win. I almost didn't play, but I'm so glad I did."
It was a good day for all the Mounties and their fans as Mount Greylock's girls matched the boys with a 4-1 win over the Generals.
Foehl helped Mount Greylock's boys (9-0) sweep the singles points, adding his victory to wins by Jacob Fink at No. 2 and Josh Narey at No. 3.
Narey rallied for a three-set win over Adam Quinto, prevailing, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
At first doubles, Mount Greylock's Sam Dils and Toby Foehl dropped just two games en route to a two-set win.
Pittsfield's tandem of Tom Rindfuss and Liam Fitzgibbons won a third-set tiebreaker to take a point at second doubles.
Mount Greylock's girls also swept singles play, where Isabel Northington, Josie Dalsin and Charlotte Sanford each won.
Northington won, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles. Her addition to the team is a big reason the Mounties are 3-6 this season after beating PHS for the second time.
"We got the added bonus of getting a legitimate No. 1 player, which helps us a lot, but overall I'm happy with the improvement of the girls who are developing -- the two through seven players," Mount Greylock coach John Jacobbe said. "They are playing at a higher competitive rate. They're starting to believe in themselves.
"We're definitely better than we were at the beginning of the year. We still have a ways to go, but we're starting to get a taste of victory."
One sign of the team's improvement, Tuesday's first career varsity win for Sanford at third singles.
"She can hit the ball really well in practice, and she's learning how to win matches," Jacobbe said. "Today was a good matchup for her, and she was able to pull it out and get the win. I'm really happy for her because she's here every day working hard and trying to get better."
