White Hot Performances Earn Weekly Honors for Kirby, Miller
In honor of this week's opening of the Winter Olympics, we recognize two of last week's standouts on skis for the iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week.
Lauren Miller led the Mount Greylock cross country ski team to state championships the last two seasons.
This season, she once again is leading the Mounties to the top of the Berkshire County League.
Miller on Wednesday was at the head of the pack, leading a 1-2 finish for Mount Greylock, which cruised to a 14-point win in the team standings.
In the month of January, Miller won all three races she entered. Not coincidentally, Mount Greylock's girls were at the top of the podium in each of those three meets.
The Mounties defend their home turf one more time this Tuesday, the final tune-up before they go for a third straight state crown on Feb. 10 at Prospect Mountain in Vermont.
The county's downhill league, meanwhile, has two meets left in the regular season: Thursday's slalom and a Feb. 9 giant slalom at Bousquet.
Oliver Kirby and the Lenox boys will look to continue their stranglehold on the top spot of the podium.
The Millionaires last week posted their fourth first-place finish in four meets to start the six-meet season.
Lenox is four points ahead of Pittsfield, which has finished second in each of the first four meets, in large part because Kirby has hit the finish line first in three races.
Kirby leads a pack of four Millionaires atop the league's individual leader board as Lenox has been a model of consistency, taking first, second and third in half the league's races.
The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Bedard Bros.
