The winter high school sports season is just a few days old, but two local basketball teams packed a lot of action -- and a lot of winning -- into the abbreviated Week 1.

Two of the key performers for those squads are this week's iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week.

Jake Wasuk has led a very balanced scoring attack for the Wahconah boys in the early going.

Wasuk scored 19 points to lead the way in Thursday's season-opener at Lee and added 14 points two days later when Wahconah topped Frontier at the Pioneer Valley Tipoff at UMass Amherst.

He is one of four Wahconah players averaging double figures this winter, and a fifth teammate is just outside that range with 16 points in two games.

Wahconah faces two tough tests at home this week: Taconic on Monday and Hoosac Valley on Thursday as play gets started in the Berkshire County League.

The Mount Greylock girls face their first test in the Franklin North on Wednesday when they travel south to face Lee.

Last week, the Mounties passed a non-league test with flying colors when they won both their games by 40 points in the Franklin Tech Holiday Tournament.

For the second straight season, Mount Greylock sophomore Tanley Drake was named the tournament's most outstanding player, but this year, if anything, she was "outstandinger."

Drake scored 30 in the opener and 21 in the title game. Last year, as a ninth-grader, she averaged a team-best 11 points per game.

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Bedard Bros.
