A Taste of Chocolate at the Clark

Print Story | Email Story
Sumptuous delights featuring Tolberone chocolate, prepared by local celebrity chefs, will make the "Chocolate Challenge" at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute a mouthwatering cocoa extravaganza. Two winning entries will be chosen on Sunday, October 29 between 4:30 to 5:30 pm. A public taste test will determine one of the two winners and local food critics and editors will select the other winner of the chocolate cook-off. The contest is one of several events held in conjunction with the current special exhibition, Alpine Views: Alexandre Calame and the Swiss Landscape which is sponsored by Tolberone. Admission to the "Chocolate Challenge" is free and space is limited. Local eateries stepping up to the challenge will be Hobson's Choice, Tunnel City Coffee, Café Latino, Mezze Bistro and Bar, Castle Street Café, and Jae's at the Clark. Swiss chocolate maker Toblerone is providing over 90 pounds of milk, dark, and white Swiss chocolate to the chefs for this event. Hoping to win over people's taste buds, chefs will bring their most delectable entries to the "Chocolate Challenge" for the public and judges to taste. Two winners will be announced. Food critics and editors Amanda Rae Busch, of Berkshire Living, and Deanne Moskowitz, of The Berkshire Eagle, will judge the savory fare and pick one of the winners. A popular ballot, hence the tastings, will determine the other winner, the public's favorite. This "Chocolate Challenge" will whet your appetite for all things Swiss. At 2 pm, prior to the chocolate tasting, catch a free showing of the 1975 action thriller The Eiger Sanction (123 minutes, rated R), staring Clint Eastwood as an art history professor/international assassin sent to the Alps in search of a Russian killer. Admission to the film is free. "The staff at the Clark looks forward to seeing, and especially tasting, how the various chefs put Toblerone chocolate to use in the recipes," said Michael Conforti, director of the Clark. "These local chef are extremely talented and should submit some wonderfully diverse and delicious entries." "We at Tolberone are so excited to be partnering with the Clark on the Alpine Views exhibition as well as the 'Chocolate Challenge.' We see this exhibition as a great opportunity to share both geographic and culinary masterpieces of the Swiss culture," said Akym Kuzmick, brand manager of Tolberone. "We wish all the chefs the best of luck and all of the participants at the 'Chocolate Challenge' a delicious event experience!" Pittsfield Council Passes $232.7M Budget

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council unanimously approved a $232.7 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

It is a modest, almost 2.9 percent increase from FY26.

"I do want to give the community kind of a heads up as we move forward on budgets. What we see coming out of the federal government that's trickling down to the states, it's going to be harder and harder for us as a community to meet our needs under the Proposition 2 1/2," Councilor at Large Alisa Costa said.

"We're going to have challenges, as we've seen communities across the state trying to override the Proposition 2 1/2, because we have dwindling amounts of money coming from the state and federal government."

She pointed out that, at the same time, utility bills are going up for both residents and the city, as are the costs of pavement and other items.

The amended budget of $232,777,720, down from the $232,782,090 originally proposed, includes cuts to the Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the restoration of funds for councilors to attend the annual Massachusetts Municipal Association conference.

The Pittsfield Public Schools' $86,855,061 budget includes $68,886,061 in state Chapter 70 funding and $18 million from the city. With $345,000 in school choice and Richmond tuition revenues, it totals $87,200,061 and is an approximately $300,000 increase from the Pittsfield Public Schools' FY26 budget of $86.9 million.

The district's budget will fund 13 schools, as Morningside Community School will retire in the fall, and includes the middle school restructuring.

Councilors also approved the use of $2 million in certified free cash to reduce the tax rate, and appropriated $450,551 for parking-related expenditures.
