Certified treasurer
NORTH ADAMS — Jennifer Macksey Ethier, the city’s treasurer/collector was recently awarded a certificate designating her as a Certified Massachusetts Municipal Treasurer.
The certification was conferred by the Board of Certification of the statewide organization of local tax collectors and treasurers, the Massachusetts Collectors and Treasurers Association.
Certification is awarded only after candidates have been in office a minimum of three years. They must attend the association’s annual school at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in August each year for a minimum of three years and complete a rigorous schedule of required courses. Lastly, they must successfully pass the Certification Board’s examination, covering such subjects as municipal finance law, property and motor-vehicle tax laws and collections, cash management and numerous other subjects of concern to public finance officials.
In a letter to Mayor John Barrett III, Executive Director Nils L. Nordberg of the Massachusetts Collectors and Treasurers Association, extended congratulations and conveyed the thanks of that body to the people of North Adams for supporting Ethier’s efforts, which culminated in the honor and achievement.
Ethier received her Certificate on Dec. 15 at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester during luncheon ceremonies attended by many state and local government notables.
Epiphany sing
NORTH ADAMS — The First United Methodist Church, 159 East Main St., will host an Epiphany Carol Sing, Sunday, Jan. 2, at 4 p.m., followed by a “light supper.†All are invited.
Adams scholarships
WILLIAMSTOWN — Superintendent Mark Piechota has announced that 30 seniors at Mount Greylock Regional High School are among the first 13,000 students statewide to receive the state’s new John and Abigail Adams Scholarship.
The scholarship is available to students whose MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System tests) performance puts them at the top 25 percent of their district. To be eligible, students must either score Advanced on one exam and Proficient on the other, or Advanced on both the English and math exams.
Recipients are granted four years of free tuition at the University of Massachusetts or at any of the nine state or 15 community colleges in Massachusetts. The Mount Greylock recipients of the Adams Scholarships are as follows:

Students who receive the Adams Scholarship must complete their college program in four years or less and maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Last academic year, the average tuition per semester was $740 at community colleges, $977 at state colleges and $1,575 at the University of Massachusetts.
Holiday sing
NORTH ADAMS — The public is invited to a Community Holiday Sing at Western Gateway Heritage State Park today (Thursday, Dec. 23,) at 4 p.m. in front of the lighted holiday tree in front of the Visitors’ Center.
The program will be led by voice students under the supervision of their teacher, Kathleen Toohey-Carbone. Following the program, hot chocolate will be available at The International Outlet in Building 1. Information: Marlayne Wineberg, 664-4580.
Decorating winners
NORTH ADAMS — Members of the United Neighborhood Organization’s Steering Committee went out Tuesday evening, Dec. 14, to select the winners for the annual Holiday House Decorating Contest.
The winners were: 349 River St., Sid Hermon; 25 Adams St., Julie Schmidt; 200 Eagle St., Shawn Bohl and Bruce Carlow; 102 Liberty St., Richard and Catherine Remillard; corner of Veazie and North streets, Leon and Maryanne King; and 90 Bracewell Ave., Glen Wilson and Lee Rutan.
Prizes of Christmas lawn ornaments, Christmas-tree cookie jars and other Christmas items were awarded each winner. Judges were Joan Preite, Edna Rudnick and Shirley Davis.
Holiday trash
ADAMS — The Northern Berkshire Solid Waste Management District reminds its patrons that the following items cannot be accepted in the recycled paper mix:
Wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, tinsel, any box with plastic coatings or windows, packing peanuts and any Styrofoam. All those items must be disposed of as trash.
Items that can be recycled are corrugated boxes, paperboard gift boxes and tissue paper.
Basketball tournament
ADAMS — The Adams Police Athletic League (PAL), in partnership with the Youth Center Inc., will sponsor a 3-on 3-basketball tournament for fifth to eighth graders on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
“Last year’s tournament was such a success we decided to partner with the Youth Center Inc again,†Police Sgt. Scott McWhirt, PAL manager, said in a news release,
The tournament will be held at Adams Memorial Middle School beginning at 9 a.m. for girls and boys in fifth and sixth grades. The seventh and eighth grade games will begin at 3 p.m. The entry fee is $33 per team. Teams must sign-up by today [Thursday, December 23].
Scott Nichols, board member of the Youth Center and co-facilitator with McWhirt for the basketball classic, said the tournament will run in pool-play format.
“We’re trying to keep things as simple as possible, with the focus on the kids and their families having an enjoyable day.†Nichols said.
Food and refreshments will be available. All proceeds from the tournament will be divided evenly between the Youth Center and the PAL

Chess championship
NORTH ADAMS — The North Berkshire Chess Club will hold its annual club championship tournament on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, in the Berkshire Room of the North Adams Holiday Inn from 8 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.
The tournament will consist of four rounds of “game/60†(all moves completed in 60 minutes per player for each game) and is open to any chess player who qualifies as a club member in 2004. Members include anyone who attended a weekly meeting during the year. The final meeting of 2004 is on Thursday, Dec. 30. Prospective members are welcome to come and watch.
The winner of the tournament will be declared club champion for all of 2005. The top five finishers will comprise the NBCC Team for the purpose of competing against teams from other area chess clubs in 2005. There is no fee to play in the tournament and spectators are welcome. Details about the club or tournament: Ray Gaudette, 458-8395.
The North Berkshire Chess Club meets every Thursday evening from 6 to 9:30 at Mass MoCA, on the first floor of Building 10. Chess players from the community are welcome and encouraged to play on meeting nights throughout the year. Membership in the club is free and open to players at all levels, with instruction available. Boards and chess sets are provided for informal games at club meetings.
