SOUTH HADLEY - The Williams College women’s volleyball team (19-6, 5-1) rebounded from a tough loss against rival Amherst to pick up two victories on the opening day of the Hall of Fame Tournament. The Ephs, playing at Mount Holyoke College, defeated Westfield State 3-0 (30-17, 30-13, 30-15) and then capped the night with a 3-1 (30-32, 30-25, 30-26, 30-23) victory over Springfield College. In the opening win over Westfield State, the Ephs were led on offense by sophomore Whitney Hitchcock (five kills), and first years Eleanor Levine (six kills) and Nicole Ballon-Landa (11 kills). Junior captain Riki McDermott also contributed posting nine digs. The second match proved to be a lot closer, with the Ephs dropping the first game before sweeping the final three. "This was a textbook matchup of Springfield versus Williams," said head coach Fran Vandermeer. "This was a really competitive, well played defensive match by both teams, and it was just a fun one to watch." The Springfield match featured outstanding performances from sophomore Melissa Pun and first year setter Emily Avis. Pun posted 21 kills and 17 digs, while Avis tallied an impressive 50 assists and 20 digs. The tandem of Hitchcock (nine kills, four blocks), and first years Ballon-Landa (16 kills, four blocks) and Kate Anderson (11 kills, four blocks) not only stepped it up on offense, but were also a presence at the net. The defense was led by McDermott (13 digs), and sophomores Chelsea Kubal (14 digs) and Andrea Scioscia (10 digs). "Our block got really involved in this match, and there were just a lot of kids making key contributions," said Vandermeer. "Emily [Avis] did a good job running the offense and Chelsea [Kubal], Andrea [Scioscia], and Riki [McDermott] were excellent on defense." The Ephs now continue play at the Hall of Fame Tournament on Saturday with a match at noon against Brandeis, followed by a 4 p.m. match versus Tufts or MIT. With a win, Vandermeer will tie Pat Manning for the most career wins at Williams (218).

Lanesborough Passes FY 2027 Budget, Warrant Articles

By Breanna SteeleiBerkshires Staff
LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Town meeting on Tuesday approved an almost $14 million fiscal 2027 budget, and approved bylaws for short-term rentals and signage, and for public safety vehicles.

Of the 20 warrant articles, one, Article 7, to use free cash to pay prior fiscal year bills of $941.27 was indefinitely postponed by Moderator David Rolle because the bills were for the fire association.

Some 247 of the town's more than 2,600 registered voters filled Lanesborough Elementary School, debating articles during a meeting that lasted more than three hours.

The town's 2027 spending plan is up more than 10 percent, with the main increases from higher enrollment in the regional schools and the McCann Technical School renovation project.

Voters approved the assessment of $7,586,284 for Mount Greylock Regional School. They also approved Article 11, which was the use of $16,298.48 in free cash for the McCann's roof and window replacement project so as not to impact the budget.

Ambulance Director Jen Weber is planning 24-hour coverage, which means more staff and a hike in her budget. Article 5 asked the town to appropriate $234,100 to operate the Ambulance Enterprise Fund for salaries and expenses, which passed.

Fire Chief Jeff DeChaine spoke to the audience on his articles and the need for a new truck to replace the 1996 fire truck, listed on the warrant articles for a total $813,366, which includes a $100,000 contingency cost on whether a 2026 model-year chassis can be secured before new emissions standards in 2027. If they get the 2026 chassis, that contingency likely won't be needed.
