CLARKSBURG, Mass. — More than 30 residents packed into the Selectmen's meeting on Wednesday night to find out more about the investigation into a half-dozen break-ins here and in nearby Stamford, Vt.

The arrest of a suspect in a rash of burglaries stretching from Southern Vermont to South County has calmed some fears but residents are continuing their crime watch with the support of town officials and police. Read More ....

According to the article in transcript and eagle, he isn'accused of theft in Clarksburg - or Stamford! ..."In the Berkshires, Veremko is suspected of house breaks in Pittsfield, North Adams, Lanesborough, Dalton, Richmond, Hancock and Williamstown, according to law enforcement officials."... This guy has been a busy little beaver in other towns, but he isn't associated with the break-ins around your area (unless they think Clarksburg is part of North Adams!)...if he has stuff from your homes in his possession, there would have to be a buddy of his still out there though... I've never read a description of your 'guy'... care to share it? Editor: He is connected to two or more break-ins in Clarksburg.

The desription in Clarksburg is a tall, thin white male. 22-26. Short brown hair, black hooded sweatshirt, big baggy jeans and sneakers. He was witnessed coming and going through the woods. Doesn't match the Veremko arrest and to my knowledge the Lenox guy may be linked to Clarksburg but has NOT been charged in any of the cases yet. The Clarksburg Police are urging the public to stay alert and be vigilant. That kind of tells you what you need to know. I did read that the Lenox guy was charged with "receiving stolen property". Again, you have to read between the lines here as the police won't tell the public very much. If I lived in Clarksburg, I'd be very concerned. Generally it's a drug addict and he isn't going to kick the habit because he might get caught in a B&E.

Seeing how they haven't charged the bum in Lenox arrest for any of the Clarksburg cases I'd suggest they look for a local drug addict who knows the area. If he's on foot and coming and going through wooded areas than chances are he is a local person and most likely already well known to the cops. Perhaps they can use the same "probable cause" that Lenox used to bring in a person who matches the description and is known the cops. See if they have an alibi that matches up for the times when these poor residents were broken into. Guess you'd call that being proactive. Editor: Who says he's not being charged for the Clarksburg break-ins? Police agencies and the DA's office are working to charge him with a whole lot of stuff. There's been some confusion because the Lenox press release left out Clarksburg among the towns hit by break-ins even though Chief Williams has been among the lead investigators.

I know that I don't feel any better after last night's meeting. Basically we were told we might have something, there might be a connection, we may have a break......but watch out, they are still out there! Exactly editor. So what is the town doing to prevent other people from doing B&E's? Oh yeah, that's right, they asked the citizens to protect themselves. Editor: Well, what do you want them to do? This is your town, your government, your taxes. But consider this: There's more than 500 homes in Clarksburg but four break-ins (less than 1 percent). Two are definitely linked to a suspect in custody, the third may be (along with another one from months ago). The fourth appears to be a completely different situation. So you've got three break-ins, an arrest and hot leads on accomplices. I'm all for holding town officials' feet to the fire but just yelling "do something" isn't constructive. And how do they PREVENT future break-ins? Put a cop at every house?

FYI- When I was driving home from the Selectmen's meeting last night I saw the cops sitting on Middle Road by the school trying to catch speeders. Perhaps they think the B&E guy go would go speeding by.

If the Town of Clarksburg is so supportive of the Community Watch program, why did they NOT return the 2 request calls to reserve a meeting space at The Clarksburg Town Hall? Why do we all have to drive to Stamford to meet up there? FYI- I heard that the next Stamford/Clarksburg Community Watch meeting is scheduled for December 5th in Stamford. I will be there! Per Time Travelers post, I don't feel that sitting by the school is doing much to prevent anything. A police car driving around sounds like a good place to start. Dear Editor: Re:Taxes Plus in Clarksburg we got a bonus this year. The residents who do pay their sewer bills were rewarded by helping to pay for all the people who don't. Isn't that wonderful? No worries, the board promised it's only a one time thing. Ha! And then you wonder why we have no faith in the Selectmen. Go figure. Dear Editor: I know the sewer issue is seperate from this one, however, what the selectmen DID have control over was posting the names of the residents who DIDN'T pay their sewer bills so that everyone else could pick up the tab. That is a fact. That list should have been made public, it is a public record. I'm hoping the town residents don't mind picking up my tab for sewer this year because I think it's my turn to take a year off. Editor: The list is public. You could have gone down to Town Hall and seen it anytime. The threat of posting made a lot of people pay up, which was the whole point. Of course, townspeople can always petition to have any delinquencies published in the media.

I'd rather pay higher taxes for police and fire protection. If people aren't happy with town government vote them out at election time. You can start wit the high and mighty Selectwoman M's Lefave Editor: I was at town meeting when several residents suggested raising taxes to prevent town workers from being furloughed. They were decisively voted down. You can vote out the board but it won't make any difference if voters won't approve higher taxes.

Buck up people! Look at yourselves crying for the government to do something. How quickly you are willing to pay higher taxes, give up your privacy for public surveillance, and request unlawful searches. How about taking a little responsibility for your own safety? It seems to me that the residents of Clarksburg need to take responsibility for themselves and not expect the Police Department or the Selectmen to solve all their problems. Even with an increased police presence, burglaries will happen. Drug users are desperate and they are careless. If residents paid attention to the happenings in their own neighborhoods,this thief would have been caught much sooner. My only criticism is that I wish we were informed sooner so that we could have been more diligent in watching our neighborhoods. I honestly don't think that a Neighborhood Watch program, that involves a coordinated effort on the part of residents to commit to a specific time and patrol a given area, will work in such a rural setting. Again, we do need to take responsibility for ourselves and work WITH the police and selectmen, both of whom have been criticized unfairly. Let's stop putting the blame on anyone other than the culprit and pay attention to what's happening around us.

The guy arrested is not the only one that did Clarksburg.Pay attention. Keep you eye out. Clarksburg PD has not made an arrest. Protect your homes. Call in any suspicious guy cutting through yards and into the woods on foot. You towns people need to smarten up!

I have heard the same things as the last post. Wilson's is obvious as it's in the Eagle, and perhaps 1 other break-in can be linked to this guy. However, the CPD have to be able to put together enough evidence to charge him with the actual break-in otherwise he'll only get charged with receiving stolen property for those. We'll see what he gets charged with. Regarding some of the other break-ins, I understand that those were not done by the Veremko guy. The descriptions and the manner of the break-ins don't match. It's pretty obvious that the Clarksburglar is still out there and looking for an unoccupied house to steal from. Keep an eye out for yourself and your neighbors and call 911 when something doesn't look right. It's about the only thing we can do. One thing is for sure, these morons who do this all end up getting caught sooner or later. Look at the genious in Lenox arrest, not exactly the smartest guy you'll ever meet. The Clarksburglar is the same. He's a dope. The reason these small town guys end up stealing is because they are idiots who can't earn an honest living with their pea-sized brains. Add in a drug addiction to a brain that already doesn't function very well and you have a common petty thief who steals from intelligent hard-working people. It's always been that way. No matter how many get caught, the next loser is right there to try his luck. Better hope the Clarksburglar doesn't pick the wrong house with a homeowner prepared for him. His luck may really run out, for good!

Thanks me Too. There were two calls to police yesterday afternoon of a suspicious person heading into the woods on Middle Road just over the NA line and again on Cross Road down by the fire station. He's not done yet folks. All of these calls to Police are making his life harder but he has nothing else to do but to keep trying.

To Shocked - Just to be clear, I don't sit and wait with my shotgun loaded. I go about my normal day, with my shotgun loaded. No wonder people are confused, just look at some of the posts here. In one comment they tell you to get off your butts and help yourself, not to depend on the overworked and underpaid town officials. Then when townspeople do just that they post another comment about not taking thengs ionto your owns hands, let the police handle these things. Which is it? Just for the record I vote for people helping each other. Even the Town Selectmen thought the neighborhood watch is a great idea, and they are taking a lot of heat on the issue. I agree. Get yourselves some guns up here. Williams works as hard as he can. He is only 1 man who can only do so much. If you are sick of this guy breaking houses and robbing your community every year- then do something about it. I agree with arming yourself. This guy should know this is the wrong town. That guy had on the black hoodie and match the description - I hear. I think it is suspicious if someone walks up your driveway to cut thru your back yard -dont you? I never said I would kill someone who hurts a dog, I don't even have a dog. I have had pets killed by cars and it is traumatic for the driver and pet owner-but it never was intentional... However, Speeding on my little back road will continue to be a problem long after this criminal is locked up and if a child is killed by a speeding car it will be an avoidable tragedy and much worse to that child's family than any amount of money stolen in a break in.

Another week, another lack of a Clarksburg arrest. Thankfully, the Lenox Police were able to make one to help solve two of our cases.

My kids saw the guy with the suitcase when they got of their bus. They called me I told them to call Clarksburg Police. They got the answering machine. I told them call 911. They did and they were told they were the 3rd call on the same person.

How do we know this kid has left town? Did his mother tell someone that? ... I really hope Elvis has left the building because I think we could all use a little piece of mind knowing things are back to normal. The Selectmen in Clarksburg (and perhaps Stamford) would like all the townspeople to believe that the person arrested by LENOX POLICE is responsible for all of the recent break-ins. That is just not true. I understand their desire to calm fears and to paint other residients who know a lot more than they can possibly share as crazy vigilantes. That is not fair. I read one comment that a resident was "satisfied" with the arrest and he was now comfortable locking his door and getting back to life as normal. Good luck with all that. All of the homes broken into had their doors securely locked and in some cases a dog close by. The facts are Veremko will be charged with 1 Stamford break-in and perhaps 2 in Clarksburg. That's it folks. That means the person who is responsible for the other 3-4 break-ins in Stamford and 2 of the most recent ones in Clarksburg is still out there walking around. Reports of some Elvis-type person leaving the building shouldn't let anyones guard down. I'm sure he hasn't gone very far, and they always return. They need to be caught, not moved to another area to continue their crimes. The Editor should interview the local police and see if they have any other suspects or if the buy into the theory that Veremko did them all, I think they'd be very surprised.

That's right! we are not stupid people. And yes, I do live in Stamford and I WILL have my gun ready if and when this lowlife, druggie dirtbag decides to visit my house or my neighborhood. Multiple Departments Respond to Lanesborough Structure Fire

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Multiple fire departments responded to a structure fire off Narragansett Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

The Fire Department received a call from the owner of 6 Bangor St. reporting a smoke and flames at around 1:44 p.m.

Firefighters arriving on scene reported heavy smoke emanating from the the 1940s single-family ranch home in the thickly settle neighborhood.

The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

"The homeowner was outside doing some work, evidently, opened the door when she came back in the house, and there were flames and smoke, so she backed out and called us, and that's all we know right now," Deputy Fire Chief Glen Storie said around 2:35 p.m.

The fire was out at that time, and first responders observed "quite a bit of damage" to the home. The cause is still under investigation.

Lanesborough, Cheshire, and Pittsfield departments responded to the scene, and Hancock covered the station during the call.

"The first crew in knocked the fire right down with the first engine," Storie said.

Smoke could be seen coming from the back of the home. Part of Narragansett Avenue and Bangor Avenue were blocked off while firefighters battled the blaze.
