HERSHEY, Pa. — The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has named a Williams College golfer to the 2010 Division III All-Freshmen Team, a six-member team composed of one golfer from each of the six regions in Division III collegiate golf.

Eph freshman Jack Ervasti (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named as the GCAA’s Northeast Regional honoree. The All-Freshmen Team also includes Wesley’s Robert Ehrhardt (Mid-Atlantic), Noah Ratner of Guilford (South), DePauw’s Nick Reardon (Great Lakes), Mark Giorgi of Saint John’s (Central) and UT-Tyler’s Joey Rippel (West).

Ervasti made an immediate impression on the Eph team as he fired a 146 in the two-day Fall Invite, opening with a 70 and finishing with a 76 and tied for 11th overall. He also tied for 11th and recorded the best Eph score at the fall Hamilton Invite when he shot 77-78 for 155.

"Jack has been a steady and consistent performer for our team all year long," stated Eph head coach Rick Pohle. "From his arrival on campus in the fall, it was evident that he was going to be a contributor. It was just a matter of time before he would crack the line-up."

Ervasti’s best spring showing came at The Taconic Golf club when he tied for fourth place in the Eph Spring Invite shooting 77-75 for 152.

In 13 competitive rounds for the Ephs Ervasti averaged 77.5 a round.

"Jack is a two-sport star at Williams (golf/squash) and has all the tools to join some of our best players in the program as he matures," said Pohle. "As with most college golfers, the biggest pitfalls are expectations and handling adversity on the golf course - this ultimately determines how well players improve in the game. I am looking forward to his contributions for three more years and how he influences the players that follow him in our program."

Williamstown Finance Committee Finalizes Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Proposal

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The tax bill of a median-priced single family home will go up by 8.45 percent in the year that begins July 1 under a spending plan approved by the Finance Committee on Wednesday night.

After more than a month of going through all proposed spending by the town and public schools and searching for places to trim the budget and adjust revenue estimates, the Fin Comm voted to send a series of fiscal articles to the May 19 annual town meeting for approval.

The panel also discussed how to appeal to town meeting members to reverse what Fin Comm members long have described as an anti-growth sentiment in town that keeps the tax base from expanding.

New growth in the tax base is generated by new construction or improvements to property that raise its value. A lack of new growth (the town projects 15 percent less revenue from new growth in fiscal year 2027 than it had in FY26) means that increased spending falls more heavily on current taxpayers.

The two largest spending articles on the draft warrant for the May meeting are the appropriations for general government spending and the assessment from the Mount Greylock Regional School District.

The former, which includes the Department of Public Works, the Williamstown Police and town hall staffing, is up by just 2.5 percent from the current fiscal year to FY27 — from $10.6 million to $10.9 million.

The latter, which pays for Williamstown Elementary School and the town's share of the middle-high school, is up 13.7 percent, from $14.8 million to $16.8 million.
