NEW LEBANON, N.Y. — Darrow School is celebrating the start of its 83rd school year on Tuesday, Sept. 2, by welcoming 110 students to its mountainside campus.

According to Betsy Strickler, director of admission, 80 percent of the students are boarders and 20 percent are day students.

The school is welcoming its largest ninth-grade class in years, with 20 individuals. They come from states including Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Vermont. Approximately 28 percent are international students representing nine countries — the Bahamas, China, Jamaica, Japan, Ghana, Nigeria, Russia, Taiwan and Turkey.

"Not only is this a diverse group of students with a wide spectrum of interests, talents, and abilities, this group is also incredibly strong academically," Strickler said. "There are some remarkably talented individuals joining us this year. The faculty is excited about helping these scholars reach their maximum potential."

Darrow has a rolling admissions policy and offers mid-year enrollment on a limited basis. The School will host four open house sessions on Monday, Oct. 13; Tuesday, Nov. 11; Monday, Jan. 19, 2015; and Monday, Feb. 16, 2015. For more information: 518-794-6000 or www.darrowschool.org.

North Adams Man Indicted on Murder, Arson Charges

Staff Reports
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Darius Hazard was arraigned in Berkshire Superior Court on Thursday on two counts of first-degree murder related to deaths of his parents last November.

Hazard, 44, pleaded not guilty to the charges and to a third charge of arson of a dwelling house.

He is being held without bail at the Berkshire County House of Correction, where he has been housed since Nov. 25.

Hazard is accused of assaulting his parents, Donald Hazard, 83, and Venture Hazard, 76, on Nov. 24, 2025, and setting fire to the family on Francis Street.

The bodies of his parents were discovered in the home by firefighters.

North Adams Police said Hazard allegedly confessed to the assaults and the arson when he was taken into custody that day.

Hazard was initially arraigned in Northern Berkshire District Court on Nov. 26 and was to appear for a pretrial hearing on March 3. That hearing was postponed but he was indicted March 23 on the felony charges and his case removed to Berkshire Superior Court.
