Work Progressing on Adams Roundabout
ADAMS, Mass. — The roundabout at Columbia and Friend streets is swiftly nearing completion.
The $1.5 million project is expected to be finished within the next few weeks.
The roundabout is designed to slow traffic through intersection, specifically in preparation of development at the Greylock Glen. Friend Street will be the main access route to the glen.
Construction began last July but unexpected problems under the roadway delayed completion. Work begain again in April and the main circle was planted last week. The four islands, including one incorporating a pedestrian crossing over Columbia near the 7-Eleven, are being installed this week.
Its placement will require shifting the intersection's four corners to accommodate an 18-foot lane with 2-foot shoulders. A few large trucks had difficulty navigating the roundabout earlier this year when the jersey barriers were still up.
The state is funding the project; the town is charged with maintaining it. The intersection sees nearly 17,000 cars pass per day.
