Frost, Cold Forecast for Berkshire Region
The moderate fall weather we've had so far is about to take a sharp turn downward.
Frost and snowflakes are in the forecast for the Northeast with Accuweather cautioning that "people who have delayed making their winter preparations will want to expedite them sooner rather than later this week with many northeastern areas forecast to experience their lowest temperatures since April or March."
The temperatures have dipped on occasion over the past couple months but most days have been shirtsleeve or at least light jacket weather. Most of the region has seen temperatures averaging 3 to 6 degrees higher than normal.
Just a few weeks ago, the temperature hit 80 on Main Street in North Adams and a recent Nor'easter brought drenching rain and flooding rather than blizzard conditions.
That relief may be over as temperatures tumble in the wake as a cold front moves into the region. Today, election day in North Adams and Pittsfield, is expected to be nippy in the 40s and low 50s. Lows Tuesday night will be in the 30s and nighttime temps will drop into the 20s through the week.
The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., says " unseasonably cool temperatures" will persist across central and eastern portions of the nation. While the central and southern plains will be most affected, "less extreme temperature departures of 10 to 15 degrees below average are also expected throughout the Northern Plains, Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Northeast."
A storm system moving in from the west may bring drenching rains to our south and wet snow in the higher elevations, and push colder air across the Northeast.
"This high-pressure area will bring temperatures more typical of late November during Wednesday and Thursday," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.
Once that system passes, temperatures may rebound to more normal for November next week.
