James R. Mazzer Sr.

James R. Mazzer Sr., 74, of 335 Wahconah St. died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 12, 1932, son of Walter R. and Josephine Davis Mazzer, he was a 1950 graduate of Pittsfield High School and took business courses at Bentley School of Accounting and Finance, now Bentley College. A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served aboard the USS Shadwell. Mr. Mazzer was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier for 25 years, retiring in 1984. His route included Wilson Project, where each Christmas he played Santa Claus, passing out toys to the children there. He also owned and operated the former Mazzer's Package and Variety for many years. Following his retirement, he worked as a residential counselor for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health from 1989 to 1992. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 15 and American Legion Post 68. He was a charter member of the board of directors of the Berkshire County Softball Complex and an inductee in the Pittsfield Football Hall of Fame. He leaves his wife, the former Joan Card of Holden. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Bonnie J. White of Holden; three sons, James R. Mazzer Jr., Timothy F. Mazzer and Mark C. Mazzer, all of Pittsfield; 10 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathy Lee Mazzer. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for James R. Mazzer Sr., who died Sunday, April 23, 2006, will be Wednesday at 8:15 from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church celebrated by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club or the Jimmy Fund, both in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201. He enjoyed going to his grandchildren's activities and watching the Post 68 American Legion baseball team, which was coached by his son Jim.
