County Athletes Get a Jump on Spring Season

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – When it comes to hops, the Easter Bunny has nothing on Berkshire County’s high school track and field athletes.
Mount Greylock’s Teresa Moresi broke a 22-year-old Berkshire County record in the pole vault at Saturday’s Mount Greylock Invitational.
Wahconah’s Cooper Calvert flirted with the county mark in the high jump.
Monument Mountain’s Siddy Culbreth earned an impressive double in the long jump and triple jump.
And they’re just getting started.
The first day of the county season saw some impressive marks on the track and in the field as seven of the county’s eight teams tested themselves under sunny skies.
Some of the biggest performances in the non-scoring event came from the girls from host Mount Greylock.
The two-time reigning state champions took first place in 13 of 18 events, including all three relays and all three throws.
Moresi ran a leg on the team’s winning 4-by-100 quartet after setting a new standard in pole vault, an event that featured only Mount Greylock student-athletes as the Mounties make the most of their 2-year-old facility.
Moresi cleared 9 feet, breaking the mark of 8 feet, 8 inches set by Mount Greylock’s Michela Preite in 2002.
Her teammate, Rowan Apotsos, was a double-winner, taking first in the 200 dash and the triple jump.
Pittsfield’s Devin Wendling broke up the Mounties’ bid to sweep the jumps in impressive fashion. Her mark of 15-3.5 was more than a foot ahead of Madison Powell’s second-place performance.
Powell, though, won the high jump, clearing 5 feet for a personal record.
PRs were falling all over the facility, even though preseason practice just got underway a couple of weeks ago.
Culbreth raised his personal mark in the triple jump by about 8 inches with a leap of 46-2 - a foot and a half better than his seed time and nearly 4 feet ahead of the field. He also beat Calvert by 8 inches in the long jump with a mark of 21-1.5.
Culbreth said he was coming off a big rest after an injury-marred indoor campaign.
“I started [the indoor season] upper 44s and hit a 45, and then I got injured a little bit in January,” he said. “I went to nationals, but it wasn’t great. So this is a nice rebound for me.”
Calvert, who placed second in the state last spring with a jump of 6-4, cleared 6-7 on Saturday afternoon. With a tournament title and a PR in his pocket, he put the bar at 6-8.75 – which would have edged Arty Gennari’s 2005 county record – and just grazed it on the way down on his first attempt. Calvert “settled” for the 6-7 that makes him the person to beat this spring after finishing 11 inches better than the field.
The best could be yet to come this spring for Calvert, who said he spent much of his time in preseason helping his teammates reach their potential.
“Honestly, we haven’t really practiced it a whole lot in practice, so I think the highest I’ve cleared is like 6 feet,” Calvert said. “I was hoping to at least tie my personal best, which was 6-4. I wasn’t really expecting all this. But I’m happy for it, obviously.
“We’ve got a lot of new guys trying out high jump. So I’m just trying to help them get better too. When I can, I try to put the bar up as high as I want, so I’ve been doing 6 feet, but I haven’t really passed 6 feet in practice.”
As for the rest of the boys meet, host Mount Greylock won its share of titles, including the 4-by-800 and meet-ending 4-by-400 relay, but did not approach the dominance of its girls team.
Monument Mountain’s boys team saw two of its members double. In addition to Culbreth’s long jump/triple jump wins, Everett Pacheco took first in the 800 and 1600.
Taconic, meanwhile, got a pair of wins from Romeo Yankey, who swept the 100 and 200.
The one team not in action on Saturday, Lenox, opens the county’s dual meet season on Wednesday when it visits Hoosac Valley. Then the other six teams will compete in three-way duals on Friday at Mount Greylock and Taconic.
