WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Mount Greylock's Nyein Soe caught some grief from his teammates over a failed trick shot late in his No. 1 singles match on Monday.

But that between the legs effort may have turned the trick in Soe avoiding a late slump and avoiding a third set.

Soe led Lenox's William Palmer, 5-1, in the second set, but Palmer battled back to get within 5-4 before Soe prevailed, 6-3, 6-4, to complete a 5-0 team victory for the Mounties.

"You just need to find a way to regroup," Soe said. "Toward the end, I was choking a little bit, but I guess when I did that between the legs shot, it loosened me up even more so it was easier to regroup.

"It definitely broke the tension."

It certainly gave his teammates a good laugh, as they chided him that the hot dog move earned him some pushups.

And it was a good day for smiles all the way around in the Mount Greylock program, which saw the girls defeat Lenox, 3-2.

Mount Greylock's girls got wins at No. 1 singles from Tara Shastri and Melina Sfakianaki.

Shastri defeated Lenox's Victoria Vittori, 6-1, 6-1. Sfakianaki Alex Trousilek, 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 1 doubles, Mount Greylock's Charlotte Rand and Mariza Sfakianaki defeated the tandem of Emma Ingalls and Liz Mitts, 6-1, 6-4.

Lenox's Ella Kin won her No. 3 singles match, 6-0, 6-4, over Mount Greylock's Amy Larabee.

At second doubles, Lenox's Emily Czelusniak and Cami Smachetti defeated Mount Greylock's Rachel Swoap and Katie Mick, 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, 10-8, in a match decided by a super tiebreaker.

Mount Greylock's Swoap stepped in to make her first varsity start after one of the Mounties' regulars missed the match with an illness.

In the boys match, Soe was pushed the hardest of any of the Mounties on the scoreboard.

At No. 2 singles, Will Nolan defeated Rishi Kedia, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 3, Alex Cheung beat Harry Hale, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles play, Mount Greylock's No. 1 team of Jake Foehl and Gray Kaegi defeated Isaac Gotterer and Kris Vahle, 6-1, 6-3. In No. 2 doubles, Matt and Aaron Kleiner beat Hugo Male and Joe Molk, 6-0, 6-0.

Mount Greylock takes on Mount Everett on Tuesday and figures to get a really stern test on Thursday when it travels to Great Barrington for a rematch with Monument Mountain.

The Monument girls are Berkshire County's only unbeaten and have a 5-0 win over Mount Greylock in a match that featured two three-setters.

Mount Greylock's boys beat Monument, 3-2, in Williamstown to give the Spartans their only county loss this spring.

"As a team, we're pretty confident," Soe said. "The only match we lost was to the team from [Manchester] Vermont, Burr & Burton. Within the county, we're pretty confident we can take on any team."
